One of the highest honors in the field of health and medicine, election to NAM recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievement and commitment to service.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EGarc\u0026iacute;a is the third person from Georgia Tech and the second director of the Petit Institute to receive the honor. Susan Margulies, former chair of the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/bme.gatech.edu\/bme\/\u0022\u003EWallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Tech and Emory University\u003C\/a\u003E, was elected last year, and Bob Nerem, founding director of the Petit Institute, was elected in 1992.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;I\u0026rsquo;m excited, surprised, and truly honored that my colleagues feel I deserve this recognition,\u0026rdquo; said Garc\u0026Iacute;a, Regents\u0026rsquo; professor in the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.me.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003EGeorge W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering\u003C\/a\u003E at Georgia Tech.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAccording to the Academy, Garc\u0026iacute;a\u0026rsquo;s election was based on his significant contributions in engineering new biomaterial platforms for elicit targeted tissue repair, for developing innovative technologies that exploit cell adhesive interactions, and for new insights into mechanobiology.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;Andr\u0026eacute;s is an outstanding researcher, accomplished technologist, and a visionary leader who represents the very best of Georgia Tech,\u0026rdquo; said Raheem Beyah, dean and Southern Company Chair of Georgia Tech\u0026rsquo;s College of Engineering. \u0026ldquo;I\u0026rsquo;m thrilled \u0026mdash; and certainly not surprised \u0026mdash; that he has achieved such an impressive honor.\u0026rdquo;\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EIt\u0026rsquo;s the second National Academies distinction for Garc\u0026iacute;a this year. In February, he was elected into the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.nae.edu\/\u0022\u003ENational Academy of Engineering\u003C\/a\u003E. In addition to being among the highest honors in his profession, election to the Academies are also personally gratifying to Garc\u0026iacute;a, who is proud to be following in the footsteps of his old friend and mentor, Nerem, who died in March 2020.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;Bob was such an influential and formative person in my life,\u0026rdquo; said Garc\u0026iacute;a, who began his career at Georgia Tech in 1998, following graduate studies and postdoctoral research at the University of Pennsylvania.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;So much of what I learned about being a faculty member \u0026ndash; how to behave, how to be a role model and remain grounded \u0026ndash; came from watching Bob,\u0026rdquo; Garc\u0026iacute;a continued. \u0026ldquo;He always believed in me. I\u0026rsquo;m very appreciative of all the people who have supported me and believed in me over the years.
