Article by Emma Ryan

Working with your advisor, there will be good moments and challenging moments. Thankfully, there's a resource available to help you navigate the ups and downs of your relationship.

"The Mutual Expectations of Research Advisors and Advisees Document recognizes how vital the advisor-advisee relationship is," said Bonnie Ferri, vice provost for Graduate Education and Faculty Development. "We hope that you'll take the time to go through it with your advisor to find ways for you to work together in a more healthy and productive manner.”

The document, which was developed in 2016, sets forth guidelines for both you and your advisors and faculty members. The document has been approved by both Graduate Student Government and Tech’s Faculty Governance.

Here are a few expectations for advisors outlined in the document:

Respect as a person, student, and employee.

Open and clear communications.

Guidance on research, degree completion, and career.

And here are a few expectations outlined for advisees:

Respect as a person and professor.

Open and clear communications.

Productivity and commitment to progressing through degree programs.

Responsibility for resources, standards, materials, documents, etc.

Teamwork.

To read the full document, see Expectations of Advisors and Advisees.
