{"650966":{"#nid":"650966","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Office of Hispanic Initiatives Celebrates 2021 Hispanic Heritage Month","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EHispanic Heritage Month takes place annually Sept. 15 through Oct. 15 across the nation as a time to recognize and celebrate the various contributions, cultures, and extensive histories of the American Hispanic and Latinx communities. \u0026ldquo;Hispanic Heritage Week\u0026rdquo; was first observed in 1968 under President Lyndon Johnson, but was extended to a monthlong period under President Ronald Reagan in 1988.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\r\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\r\nThe period was chosen for its significance to Hispanic\/Latinx communities: Sept. 15 is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Mexico and Chile celebrate independence days on Sept. 16 and 18, respectively. D\u0026iacute;a de la Raza (Day of the Race) is also recognized in the U.S. and in some Latin American countries on Oct. 12 as the anniversary of Christopher Columbus\u0026rsquo; arrival in what would become known as North, Central, and South America. The day also centers around honoring the native people, traditions, and cultures of the Americas.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe Center for Student Diversity and Inclusion\u0026#39;s\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/hispanicoffice.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003EOffice of Hispanic Initiatives\u003C\/a\u003E (OHI) will sponsor and co-sponsor a host of virtual and in-person events open to faculty, staff, and students in celebration of 2021 Hispanic Heritage Month, which carries the national theme \u0026quot;Esperanza: A Celebration of Hispanic Heritage and Hope.\u0026quot;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;The overall number of\u0026nbsp;Hispanic\/Latinx students at Georgia Tech continues to grow and Hispanics\/Latinxs are now the largest ethnic minority in the U.S.,\u0026rdquo; Jorge Breton, director of OHI said. \u0026ldquo;Hispanic Heritage Month is a great opportunity to celebrate and recognize the economic, scientific, cultural, and social contributions of these communities, especially as the Institute \u0026ndash; and society at large \u0026ndash; makes efforts to be more diverse, equitable, and inclusive.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EDiley Hern\u0026aacute;ndez, associate vice president for \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/diversity.gatech.edu\u0022\u003EInstitute Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion\u003C\/a\u003E added, \u0026ldquo;Hispanic Heritage Month is always a special time of reflection for the Hispanic\/Latinx community. It is especially during difficult times like these that the deep sense of community that is so prevalent in our cultures becomes a centerpiece of our resiliency and fuels our hope. The seminar series shares experiences of successful professionals of Latino\/Hispanic heritage working in various fields including academia, private industry, and government. (Presented by the Latino Organization of Graduate Students (LOGRAS), the GoSTEM Program, and the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering.)\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EThe Afro-Latinx Experience Panel\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\r\nWednesday, Sept. 29, noon-1 p.m.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAfro-Latinx members of the Georgia Tech community will share personal experiences,\u0026nbsp; through compelling and inspiring conversations during\u0026nbsp;the Afro-Latinx Experience Panel. Viewers\u0026nbsp;will learn about the panelists\u0026rsquo; experiences\u0026nbsp;growing up in their communities as Afro-Latinos.\u0026nbsp;The conversation will also focus on the\u0026nbsp;Afro-Latinx perspective on racial injustice, racism and colorism, as well as proactive approaches to identify solutions.
