Despite its societal importance, monsoon prediction remains a major challenge to date, and the future development of the monsoon systems in a changing global climate remains uncertain. In this talk, I compare and contrast the South Asian and East African monsoon systems, putting emphasis on the importance of internal processes forcing monsoon variability across a variety of timescales, noting some of the major gaps in our current understanding of monsoon systems.
