{"649821":{"#nid":"649821","#data":{"type":"external_news","title":"UrbanHeatATL Is Mapping Atlanta\u2019s Temperatures To Help Those In Danger Of The Heat","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EWhen Chloe Kiernicki leaves her house near Georgia Tech, she takes the temperature wherever she walks.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EShe has what\u0026rsquo;s basically a very fancy thermometer that she clips onto her bag that records the temperature as she goes, noting when and where it\u0026rsquo;s hotter or cooler as she moves around her neighborhood.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EWhat she finds as she walks around would probably be familiar to many Atlantans in the summer: smaller streets with trees shading the sidewalk feel cooler than bigger streets with lots of lanes, surrounded by parking lots.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EApproaching a busy 14\u003Csup\u003Eth\u003C\/sup\u003E\u0026nbsp;Street intersection, Kiernicki notes the lack of trees.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;There\u0026rsquo;s so many roads converging and all these gas stations,\u0026rdquo; she says. \u0026ldquo;And so just a lot of concrete right now.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EKiernicki graduated from Tech this past year.
