EPICenter Hosts Energy Unplugged Camp for Students

On July 8-12, the Strategic Energy Institute's Energy Policy and Innovation Center (EPICenter) hosted "Energy Unplugged," an energy-themed STEM camp for high school students, administered by the Georgia Tech Summer Peaks program from CEISMC. During the week, SEI's Rich Simmons and Kerri Metz led hands-on activities, interactive demonstrations, educational presentations, and a field trip to Georgia Power's Morgan Falls hydroelectric facility and GE's Monitoring & Diagnostics Center.

Our course included segments on how electricity is generated, where it goes, what it costs, its environmental impact, and how it might be brought to more of the world's 1.3 billion people without electricity. Student teams constructed small scale energy generation devices and measured electricity production while comparing pros and cons among wind, solar, and fossil fuel technologies. The week concluded with presentations of team projects to instructors and parents.
