{"648819":{"#nid":"648819","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Five Researchers Gain New Titles in the College of Sciences","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003ETwo researchers from the\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/chemistry.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003ESchool of Chemistry and Biochemistry\u003C\/a\u003E and three from the\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/biosciences.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003ESchool of Biological Sciences\u003C\/a\u003E have received promotions for their work, support, and service.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/chemistry.gatech.edu\/people\/zhao\/liangjun\u0022\u003ELiangjun Zhou\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;and\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/chemistry.gatech.edu\/people\/gaul\/david\u0022\u003EDavid Gaul\u003C\/a\u003E, both research scientists II in the School of Chemistry and Biochemistry, have been promoted to the position of senior research scientist.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EIn the School of Biological Sciences, the following promotions have occurred:\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/biosciences.gatech.edu\/people\/bartosz-ilkowski\u0022\u003EBartosz Ilkowski\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u0026mdash; principal research technologist (formerly senior research technologist)\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/biosciences.gatech.edu\/people\/kuntal-mukherjee\u0022\u003EKuntal Mukerjee\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u0026mdash; senior research scientist (formerly research scientist II)\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/biosciences.gatech.edu\/people\/brandy-olmer\u0022\u003EBrandy Olmer\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u0026mdash; research associate II (formerly research associate)\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EFor Gaul, the promotion comes after spending five years as the leader of the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/petitinstitute.gatech.edu\/research\/systems-mass-spectrometry\/metabolomics\u0022\u003EMetabolomics\/Lipidomics core\u003C\/a\u003E in the\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/petitinstitute.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003EPetit Institute for Bioengineering and Bioscience\u003C\/a\u003E. In that role, Gaul has taken on a leadership role in the National Institutes of Health\u0026rsquo;s\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/commonfund.nih.gov\/moleculartransducers\u0022\u003EMolecular Transducers of Physical Activity Consortium\u003C\/a\u003E, which is examining the impact of that activity at the molecular level in humans and animals.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EDuring his time with the Consortium, Gaul developed a comprehensive platform that can profile more than 600 lipids (materials in living cells that can include fatty acids, neutral fats, waxes and steroids) in a semi-quantitative fashion.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EGaul is also actively participating in research at the\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/cellmanufacturing.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003EMarcus Center for Therapeutic Cell Characterization\u003C\/a\u003E, and is collaborating with Georgia Tech and\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.choa.org\/\u0022\u003EChildren\u0026rsquo;s Healthcare of Atlanta\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;researchers to investigate the effects of traumatic brain injury in children.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;Gaul has shown incredible leadership in reshaping the small molecule mass spectrometry services at Georgia Tech, bringing us to a position where we are competitive at a national and international level,\u0026rdquo; says\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/chemistry.gatech.edu\/people\/winters\/sue\u0022\u003ESue Winters\u003C\/a\u003E, administrative manager II in the School of Chemistry and Biochemistry.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ELiangjun Zhao came to Georgia Tech following Ph.D. studies in enzymology at Wayne State University.\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/chemistry.gatech.edu\/people\/Finn\/M.G.\u0022\u003EM.G. Finn\u003C\/a\u003E, professor and chair in the School of Chemistry and Biochemistry and James A. Carlos Family Chair for Pediatric Technology, says Zhao has been a leading member of the Finn Lab for\u0026nbsp;five years. \u0026ldquo;In that role, his\u0026nbsp;accomplishments include several outstanding papers on the genetic modification\u0026nbsp;of virus-like particles (VLPs) as robust display platforms for functional molecules and as\u0026nbsp;containers for active enzymes,\u0026rdquo; Finn says. \u0026ldquo;He has also created new\u0026nbsp;methods for VLP evolution, and was an important contributor to Georgia\u0026nbsp;Tech\u0026rsquo;s coronavirus response as a member of the team producing reagents and methods for\u0026nbsp;campus-wide testing.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EZhao is also a member of the Molecular Evolution Core Facility, responsible for creating and adapting\u0026nbsp;procedures for DNA synthesis and high-throughput DNA sequencing. He has\u0026nbsp;represented Georgia Tech \u0026ldquo;very well\u0026rdquo; at a Gordon Research Conference, and as a reviewer for\u0026nbsp;several journals, Finn adds.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;Bartosz (Ilkowski) and I have been colleagues for eighteen years and he still amazes me with his knowledge and innovative ideas relating to anything associated with high performance computing and computing in general, all while being self-taught,\u0026rdquo; says\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/biosciences.gatech.edu\/people\/jessica-forness\u0022\u003EJessica Forness\u003C\/a\u003E, center manager of the\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/cssb.biology.gatech.edu\/index.html\u0022\u003ECenter for the Study of Systems Biology\u003C\/a\u003E. \u0026ldquo;Whether it\u0026rsquo;s water-chilled doors, optimizing computer time, density and cooling, or just helping me fix the printer, he always has an innovative solution.\u0026rdquo;\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;Kuntal\u0026nbsp;Mukherjee is a dedicated scientist and a good friend,\u0026rdquo; says lab manager Gary Newman. \u0026ldquo;He works hard on his research and is always able to help his coworkers.
