This year, it also included seven teams of biomedical engineering students presenting the innovations they developed for their \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/bmecapstone.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003ECapstone Design projects\u003C\/a\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EIt\u0026rsquo;s a milestone achievement for the students and the Capstone program in the Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering: this is the first time Capstone teams have presented at a conference as part of the poster sessions or podium talks.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThese weren\u0026rsquo;t student design competition presentations; the students shared their advances as part of the professional program alongside other researchers.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;This is a wonderful opportunity that allowed our students to showcase their innovative work to a broader audience,\u0026rdquo; said James Rains, who leads the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/bmecapstone.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003ECoulter BME Capstone program\u003C\/a\u003E and is a professor of the practice. \u0026ldquo;This audience was composed of clinicians and researchers, who are passionate about clinical and translational science. Our students appreciated the ability to tell their story to a group of individuals who can provide relevant feedback and insights.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EOne of the breakout sessions featured a presentation from a team that created a \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=BWgeyZrXphc\u0022\u003Eprototype plasma viscometer to rapidly test the viscosity of blood plasma in Covid-19 patients\u003C\/a\u003E. Current devices are expensive or require too much time to process samples. Their solution uses light to measure fluid flow, which is proportional to viscosity.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;It was a really rewarding experience, because I was able to present and get feedback from top scientists and researchers within the BME and clinical science field,\u0026rdquo; said Lichao Tang, one of the three team members who presented the device. All graduated with their bachelor\u0026rsquo;s degrees in the fall. \u0026ldquo;It was also valuable to learn about the research on Covid-19 and infectious disease from the other presenters during my session.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAnother team presented their device to measure \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.bme.gatech.edu\/bme\/exploring-blast-exposure-and-brain\u0022\u003Eblast exposure of mortarmen\u003C\/a\u003E in the U.S. Army \u0026mdash; work that won them the first-place award among nearly 70 posters in the translational research session.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EOther poster presentations included devices to improve \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=VcvhHAtP9LQ\u0022\u003Eearly detection of preeclampsia\u003C\/a\u003E in rural Ethiopia; \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Bx6UAu_6bFg\u0022\u003Ebetter model blood vessels and simulate their behavior\u003C\/a\u003E in specific patients; \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=UlScKbzDuLY\u0022\u003Eregulate infants\u0026rsquo; body temperature\u003C\/a\u003E and prevent hypothermia in Ethiopia; \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=qdqyUKXMgoQ\u0022\u003Esimulate brain mapping\u003C\/a\u003E to help train neurosurgeons; and \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.bme.gatech.edu\/bme\/capstone-teams-journey\u0022\u003Eimprove treatment for cardiac arrest patients\u003C\/a\u003E by \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=h9pDsZPC2y8\u0022\u003Eimproving blood flow to the brain\u003C\/a\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EIt\u0026rsquo;s a wide range of applications that represents just a slice of the projects that students tackle each semester. Rains said he hopes the invitation to show off the students\u0026rsquo; work at the conference will spark new opportunities for future teams.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;This allows us to create new connections who will potentially participate in the near future in our Capstone program. These posters and talks demonstrate the potential of partnering with a team of Georgia Tech engineers to jointly develop a solution to a challenge that professionals have identified or encountered,\u0026rdquo; Rains said.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ERains said the Capstone teams applied to participate in the conference with the encouragement of Andr\u0026eacute;s Garc\u0026iacute;a, executive director of Georgia Tech\u0026rsquo;s Petit Institute for Bioengineering and Bioscience and one of the lead planners of the conference.
