Control of the\u0026nbsp;MTDC\u0026nbsp;grids need to be enhanced from two perspectives: i) Sophisticated control methods should be introduced to exploit the\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;MTDC\u0026nbsp;grids to provide ancillary services for their surrounding\u0026nbsp;AC grids; ii)\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;Reliable power electronics converters should\u0026nbsp;be integrated to the\u0026nbsp;MTDC\u0026nbsp;grids to enable their interconnection and\u0026nbsp;improve their control and operation.\u0026nbsp;From the first perspective, two challenges are addressed in this research:\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;i) A\u0026nbsp;Model Predictive Control (MPC)\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;control method is proposed;\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;ii)\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;A control method for frequency support of the AC grids through the\u0026nbsp;MTDC\u0026nbsp;grids is proposed.
