  <title><![CDATA[Andrés García Named 2020 Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors]]></title>
  <body><![CDATA[<p>Andr&eacute;s Garc&iacute;a has been elected to the <a href="https://academyofinventors.org/fellows/#:~:text=The%20NAI%20Fellows%20Program%20was,and%20the%20welfare%20of%20society.">NAI Fellows Program,</a> an honor bestowed upon the highest level of academic inventors. This distinction recognizes Garc&iacute;a&rsquo;s work in biomaterials for biotechnological applications including cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. Currently, Garc&iacute;a serves as executive director of the Parker H. Petit Institute for Bioengineering and Bioscience, Petit director&rsquo;s chair in Bioengineering and Bioscience, and Regents&rsquo; professor in the George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering.</p>

<p>Garc&iacute;a&rsquo;s <a href="https://garcialab.gatech.edu/user/3">innovative work</a> combines materials science, cell biology and engineering, with a focus on developing revolutionary new biomaterials and therapies for diseases such as type 1 diabetes, infections and bone repair. In addition to his election to the NAI Fellows, he has been recognized by the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers as a top Latino educator, the International Union of Societies of Biomaterials Science and Engineering, American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.</p>

<p>&ldquo;It is a great honor being recognized for our intellectual contributions being translated into biotechnological applications and therapies that could impact the lives of millions of individuals suffering from cardiovascular disease and diabetes,&rdquo; said Garc&iacute;a. &ldquo;This award recognizes the awesome contributions of my wonderful trainees and collaborators. With all the challenges this year, this honor is an important reminder for me that the research that we carry out is important and impactful and that life is a marathon and not a sprint.&rdquo;</p>
