Title:
Composing and Decomposing Electroacoustic Sonifications: Towards a Functional-Aesthetic Sonification Design Framework

Abstract:
The field of sonification invites musicians and scientists for creating novel auditory interfaces. However, the opportunities for incorporating musical ideas into general functional sonifications have been limited because of the transparency and communication issues with musical aesthetics. This research proposes a new design framework, spectromorphing sonification (SMSon), that facilitates the use of various musical techniques as well as a transparent representation or conveyance of data. The work is verified with two human-subject tests. An online listening test investigates how SMSon supports the general listener's structural understanding of a musically-complex sonification. A design study explores how the designer can incorporate their own aesthetic approaches while retaining the functional values of sonification.
