The event allowed students to engage in hands-on science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) activities on-campus at Georgia Tech.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EStudents from Atlanta, Gwinnett, and Clayton County Public Schools arrived on the Georgia Tech campus in the early afternoon and were greeted by Mir Jeffres, a student from the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/gtcmt.gatech.edu\/\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003EGeorgia Tech Music Technology Program\u003C\/a\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAfter, the students attended five unique breakout workshops to engage in STEAM activities and learn first-hand from Georgia Tech faculty and community professionals. The first workshop, Making Video from Music, was led by \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/cycling74.com\/\u0022\u003ECycling \u0026rsquo;74\u003C\/a\u003E members \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/steinhardt.nyu.edu\/people\/adam-rokhsar\u0022\u003EProf. Adam Rokshar\u003C\/a\u003E and Ashley Bellouin. The workshop taught students how to make eye-catching visuals that automatically reacted to their music using the provided materials and interactive media software, \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/cycling74.com\/products\/max\/\u0022\u003EMax\u003C\/a\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EWorkshops two through five were presented by GoSTEAM teachers and GoSTEAM Innovators in Residence. The workshops included \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/earsketch.gatech.edu\/landing\/#\/\u0022\u003EEarSketch\u003C\/a\u003E on Coding and Composing, Electronic Musical Instrument Design using Micro-Bits, Prototyping Puppets and Storytelling, and Touch Boards and Audio Engineering.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ELater, Prof. Adam Roksar spoke to the workshop attendees about his background in Music Technology. Prof. Rokshar is currently a Music Technology faculty member from \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.nyu.edu\/\u0022\u003ENew York University\u003C\/a\u003E (NYU). In the past, he has worked with companies such as Converse, Microsoft, Ableton, and Splice where he has utilized his skills as a musician, animator, and programmer.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EGoSTEAM partnered with \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/music.gatech.edu\/jason-freeman\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003EProf. Jason Freeman\u003C\/a\u003E from the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/music.gatech.edu\/\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003EGeorgia Tech School of Music\u003C\/a\u003E which allowed students to attend the Art, Music, and Technology fair following the keynote presentation. The fair gave students the opportunity to experience groundbreaking art and technology projects and discuss interactive projects with creators.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ETo conclude the event, the participating students had the opportunity to attend the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/guthman.gatech.edu\/\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003EMargaret Guthman New Musical Instrument Competition\u003C\/a\u003E, where music technology innovators from around the world showcased their original musical instruments. GoSTEAM Program Directors, \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.ceismc.gatech.edu\/about\/staffdirectory\/sabrina-grossman\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003ESabrina Grossman\u003C\/a\u003E, and \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.ceismc.gatech.edu\/about\/staffdirectory\/analia-e-rao\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003EAnal\u0026iacute;a Rao\u003C\/a\u003E were invited on stage to discuss the GoSTEAM Program and the STEAM Innovation Workshop that took place earlier in the day in the context of Guthman.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EFinalists were paired with a skilled Atlanta musician to present their instruments in a one-of-kind Concert performance for an audience of all ages. One of those musicians was GoSTEAM Teacher, Mr. Shannon Ladson, from \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/127.clayton.k12.ga.us\/\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003EKemp Elementary School\u003C\/a\u003E who performed on stage with one of the finalists of the competition.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003ESummer Teacher Workshops\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EGoSTEAM K-12 teachers come from both the technical and art domains, and they actively collaborate to create innovative STEAM programs and activities for their students. During a normal summer, GoSTEAM teachers come to the Georgia Tech campus to share what they have done in their classrooms, to learn new skills, to brainstorm new STEAM innovations, and to plan for the upcoming year. Due to Covid-19, the 2020 professional development was shifted online to \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.bluejeans.com\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003EBlueJeans\u003C\/a\u003E. Teachers met daily for 3 weeks in June with the whole group as well as in smaller collaborative groups.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EGoSTEAM teachers created instruments with \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/microbit.org\/\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003E\u0026quot;Micro:bits\u0026quot;\u003C\/a\u003E and puppets using LEDs and buzzers; they explored issues of social justice, and voice and choice; and they designed assessment plans for their classroom innovations.
