Margaret E. Kosal, associate professor in the Nunn School, is the founding director of the Military Fellows Program.  She launched the program in 2014 with two US Army Fellows.  To date, nine Military Fellows the US Army, US Air Force, and US Navy have spent a year at Georgia Tech. 

The military fellows have responsibilities to engage with students and faculty (such as guest speakers), conduct independent research, and participate in various outreach activities.  "The interaction that the fellows have with my colleagues and students is so important," said Kosal. "For students who do not come from military families, this is often the first time they interact with anyone in the military 1-on-1. The magic happens when they aren't just looking up to them because they are Lt Colonel or Commander so-&-so, but because they have gotten to know the person!"

Georgia Tech is among 13 premier academic and research institutions that host U.S. Navy Fellows.  Among the others are Stanford's Hoover Institution, Harvard's Kennedy School of Government, Tufts University's Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, MIT's Security Studies Program, Carnegie Mellon's Institute for Politics and Strategy, RAND, and others.   This is “elite company,” according to Professor Adam N. Stulberg (Chair, Nunn School), “that stands as a testament to the Nunn School’s growing reputation as a destination for blending systematic strategic analysis with practical focus at the nexus of emerging technologies and international security.”

The Sam Nunn School of International Affairs will welcome three new fellows from the US Army, US Air Force, and US Navy this August 2020.
