However, we lack a detailed understanding of the drought stress adaptations of\u0026nbsp;environmental microbes.\u0026nbsp;Our research team\u0026nbsp;hypothesized that drought causes greater microbial allocation to survival relative to growth pathways.\u0026nbsp;Using\u0026nbsp;metatranscriptomic and metabolomic data, we\u0026nbsp;analyzedthe physiological responses\u0026nbsp;of\u0026nbsp;surface soil\u0026nbsp;microbial communities\u0026nbsp;to\u0026nbsp;long-term drought in Californian grassland\u0026nbsp;and shrubland\u0026nbsp;ecosystems.\u0026nbsp;In grassland,\u0026nbsp;microbial\u0026nbsp;communities from\u0026nbsp;10-year drought\u0026nbsp;treatments had distinct functional profileswith greater investment in\u0026nbsp;production or uptake of compatible solutes like\u0026nbsp;trehalose\u0026nbsp;and\u0026nbsp;ectoine\u0026nbsp;as well as inorganic ions to maintain cellular osmotic balance.\u0026nbsp;These communities\u0026nbsp;also increased expression of genes\u0026nbsp;underlying\u0026nbsp;capsular and extracellular polymeric substances possibly as a mechanism to retain water.\u0026nbsp;Overall,\u0026nbsp;grass litter communities\u0026nbsp;respond to drought\u0026nbsp;with greater allocation to survival\u0026nbsp;traits\u0026nbsp;relative to growth\u0026nbsp;traits. In contrast, communities on\u0026nbsp;more chemicallycomplex shrub litter had smaller physiological\u0026nbsp;responses\u0026nbsp;to long-term drought but higher investment in resource acquisition traits, suggesting that the functional response to drought is constrained by substrate quality.
