Synchronous\u003Cbr \/\u003E\r\nOpen to ALL majors\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThree basic questions provide the framework for this course:\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cul\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003EWhat makes a great city \u0026ndash; its physical form or the life it affords its inhabitants\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003EHow do cities come to be \u0026ndash; their origins and their continued development?\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003EWho is the city for \u0026ndash; for the rich and powerful or for everybody?\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\u003C\/ul\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EEach emphasizes a particular way of understanding cities:\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cul\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003EPerception and experience: what makes us, as individuals, citizens, and visitors, prefer one city over another; what makes city life in one city better over another?\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003EHistory and theory: how are cities conceived, planned, constructed and practiced?\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003EEthics: who is the city planned for; whose perceptions and experiences matter?\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\u003C\/ul\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe lectures draw primarily from Barcelona, an exemplary city that addresses all the questions above. The lectures and discussions will also draw from other cities, like Berlin and Paris; students will be encouraged to bring to the class their experiences and knowledge of cities in Asia, in Latin America, and in Africa. To ground the discussion, we will also look at American cities, Atlanta and San Francisco for example.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThere are two deliverables:\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cul\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003ELecture and Discussion Notes \u0026ndash; takeaways from the lectures and readings\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003EResearch Journal \u0026ndash; on a topic chosen by the student and explored online within the umbrella topic assigned to the class.\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\u003C\/ul\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe starter portal for this research is the website CityLab. Its content is organized into five sections: Design; Transportation; Environment; Equity; Life. The proposed umbrella topic for the class is Coronavirus and the City.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EA quick look at the site will show how the pandemic effects every dimension of cities and city life: from equity to privacy, from social protocols to technical specifications.
