This spring, five students have been honored for their academic excellence. Pierotti Memorial Scholarship\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E.\u0026nbsp;This award is presented to a top graduating senior in the College of Sciences. It is an endowment gift of the family and friends of former dean Robert Pierotti. \u003C\/em\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EWalter, an Earth \u0026amp; Atmospheric Sciences major, researches under the guidance of \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/eas.gatech.edu\/people\/cobb-dr-kim\u0022\u003EProfessor Kim Cobb\u003C\/a\u003E. She is the summer 2019 winner of the Rutt Bridges Undergraduate Initiative Award. Her research on \u0026ldquo;The influence of calibration method, interval, and resolution on Sr\/Ca-SST slopes\u0026rdquo; was presented at the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/pastglobalchanges.org\/calendar\/upcoming\/127-pages\/1722-13th-conf-paleocean-19\u0022\u003EInternational Conference on Paleoceanography\u003C\/a\u003E in Sydney, Australia, in 2019.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Ch3\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\r\n\u003Cstrong\u003EMaxwell Conte\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/h3\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cem\u003EConte is the winner of the \u003C\/em\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/osfa.gatech.edu\/cynthia-bossart-and-james-efron-scholarship\u0022\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003E\u003Cem\u003ECynthia L. Bossart and James Efron Scholarship\u003C\/em\u003E\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E\u003Cem\u003E, presented to a top out-of-state junior in the College of Sciences. It is an endowment gift of Cynthia Bossart and James Efron.\u003C\/em\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EConte, from Bowling Green, KY, majors in chemistry and chemical \u0026amp; biomolecular engineering. His research is under the guidance of \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/chemistry.gatech.edu\/faculty\/Marder\/\u0022\u003EProfessor Seth Marder\u003C\/a\u003E. Conte\u0026rsquo;s nanoparticle research article with Professor Lee Yi appeared in the journal \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.journals.elsevier.com\/biosensors-and-bioelectronics\u0022\u003E\u003Cem\u003EBiosensors and Bioelectronics\u003C\/em\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E, and in \u003Cem\u003ES\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/journal\/sensors-and-actuators-b-chemical\u0022\u003Eensors and Actuators B: Chemical,\u003C\/a\u003E \u003C\/em\u003E2019.\u0026nbsp;In 2013, Conte appeared in an article in the Bowling Green\u0026nbsp;Daily News as a local seventh-grader who was recognized for his ACT scores.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Ch3\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\r\n\u003Cstrong\u003EBerna Aliya\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/h3\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cem\u003EAliya is the recipient of the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/osfa.gatech.edu\/metha-phingbodhipakkiya-memorial-scholarship\u0022\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EMehta Phingbodhipakkiya Undergraduate Memorial Scholarship\u003C\/strong\u003E,\u003C\/a\u003E presented to a top junior in the College of Sciences. It is an endowment gift of daughter Maranee Phing.\u003C\/em\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAliya, a neuroscience major, studies with \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/biosciences.gatech.edu\/people\/young-jang\u0022\u003EProfessor Young Jang\u003C\/a\u003E in the School of Biological Sciences. The research assesses the role of the muscle stem cell on mitochondrial biogenesis. She is a scholar in the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/centerforchemicalevolution.com\u0022\u003ECenter for Chemical Evolution.\u003C\/a\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Ch3\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\r\n\u003Cstrong\u003ETsvetomira Peykova\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/h3\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EPeykova is the winner of the \u003Cstrong\u003EVirginia C. and Herschel V. Clanton Jr. Scholarship\u003C\/strong\u003E, p\u003Cem\u003Eresented to a top pre-medical student in the College of Sciences. It is an endowment gift of Herschel V. Clanton\u003C\/em\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EPeykova, a junior biology major, conducts research with \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/biosciences.gatech.edu\/people\/young-jang\u0022\u003EProfessor Young Jang\u003C\/a\u003E. Her research examines SOD2 activity in muscle samples following critical limb ischemia. She does medical volunteer work at Grady Memorial and Emory University Hospitals.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Ch3\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\r\n\u003Cstrong\u003ECollin Spencer\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/h3\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cem\u003ESpencer is the recipient of the 2020\u003C\/em\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003E \u003Cem\u003ERoger M. Wartell and Stephen E. Brossette Award\u003C\/em\u003E, \u003C\/strong\u003E\u003Cem\u003Epresented to a student who researches at the intersection of physics, mathematics, and biological sciences. \u003C\/em\u003E\u003Cem\u003EIt is an endowment gift of Stephen Brossette.\u003C\/em\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ESpencer, a major in the School of Biological Sciences, researches with \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/biosciences.gatech.edu\/people\/gregory-gibson\u0022\u003EProfessor Greg Gibson.\u003C\/a\u003E His studies involve developing new machine learning methods for single cell RNA-seq data to characterize cell type heterogeneity in Autism Spectrum Disorder.\u0026nbsp;He served as director and research consortium chair for the February 2019 \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/mentalhealthconference.gatech.edu\u0022\u003EIntercollegiate Mental Health Conference\u003C\/a\u003E at Georgia Tech.
