A group of Georgia Tech and Emory students learning the skills they hoped would change the world someday, found that day is now.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThey are making and distribute supplies to protect Emory healthcare workers as they work to save lives.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe need is now and it is growing by the day. It compelled a team of students in a joint biotech medical lab with Georgia Tech and Emory to help.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EIn one week, they designed and started the production of face shields for medical workers.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;The goal is to meet the needs locally to actually supply the Georgia Department of Public Health and when they have enough to actually supply the federal Department of Public Health stockpile.\u0026rdquo; said Dr. \u003Cstrong\u003ESusan Margulies\u003C\/strong\u003E. She is the Chair of the Biomedical Engineering Department at Georgia Tech and Emory.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EHealthcare workers are using more protective equipment than ever before.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;Because of the really high utilization of PPE in caring for patients we\u0026rsquo;ve gone 10-20 times what we usually have and so it\u0026rsquo;s hard to keep up with that.\u0026rdquo; \u003Cstrong\u003EKari Love\u003C\/strong\u003E said.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ELove is Emory Healthcare\u0026rsquo;s Director of Infection Prevention. She is also a registered nurse. She was the go-between. She took the design from the lab to the front line.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;I\u0026rsquo;d bring it over to the hospital have some healthcare workers try it, and then make a few suggestions, get it back to them, then make those edits,\u0026quot; she said.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EDr. \u003Cstrong\u003EChristopher Saldana\u003C\/strong\u003E is an assistant professor and a Georgia Tech Mechanical Engineer.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026quot;With Kari we were able to give her these prototypes. She would meet my team here on campus, \u0026nbsp;try them on and then go back to the hospital and then get feedback from them,\u0026quot; he said. \u0026quot;The students that were involved in this project did a great job trying to address those needs for the clinicians immediately and then our second iteration Kari would come back and pick up more products.\u0026quot;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EIt had to be just right; but it had to be done fast.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003ESusan Cohen\u003C\/strong\u003E is with the Global Center for Medical Innovation.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026quot;When a physician comes to you and says every hour we don\u0026rsquo;t have these someone is at risk of dying, it compels you to move faster and move faster than you thought you could,\u0026quot; she said.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThey\u0026rsquo;ve now made deliveries to Emory Hospital; and they are making up to 1,000 shields a day.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ENow the Coca-Cola Company is helping. They brought 6,000 pounds of plastic sheeting to Georgia Tech\u0026rsquo;s campus to make more.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EIt\u0026rsquo;s enough supplies for 50,000 surgical shields.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026quot;Out of people are able to come together and collaborate in a way that doesn\u0026rsquo;t happen in a normal climate and I think it\u0026rsquo;s impressive the way people are willing to collaborate,\u0026quot; Cohen said.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EDr. \u003Cstrong\u003ESamuel Graham\u003C\/strong\u003E is the Chair of the Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering at Georgia Tech.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026quot;They were quick to jump on board and to help,\u0026quot; he said. \u0026quot;Siemens, very gracious and generous in offering help.\u0026quot;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThey pulled in companies like Lazer Tech, Dupont, and Georgia Pacific.
