For \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/petitinstitute.gatech.edu\/daniel-gurevich\u0022\u003EDaniel Gurevich\u003C\/a\u003E, it\u0026#39;s a balance of hard work, gratitude, connecting the dots across distant scientific fields, and setting aside time to connect with fellow students \u0026mdash; and chessplayers.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EGurevich, who has already won a raft of academic achievement awards while at Georgia Tech, is one of 26 winners of the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.usg.edu\/news\/release\/regents_honor_scholars_from_each_institution_during_academic_recognition_da\u0022\u003E2020 University System of Georgia (USG) Academic Recognition Day Award\u003C\/a\u003E for his progress in completing bachelor degrees in the Schools of \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/physics.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003EPhysics\u003C\/a\u003E, \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/math.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003EMathematics\u003C\/a\u003E, and\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.isye.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003E Industrial \u0026amp; Systems Engineering\u003C\/a\u003E. Gurevich is the only Georgia Tech student recognized for the award.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EA candidate for May 2020 graduation, Gurevich has already published four papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals, and aspects of his research have been presented at conferences in Germany, Spain, France, Utah, and Colorado.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAs if all that isn\u0026rsquo;t enough to keep an ambitious student busy, Gurevich is also an \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.uschesschamps.com\/bio\/daniel-gurevich\u0022\u003EInternational Master\u003C\/a\u003E in chess. He started pitting pawns and bishops against each other at age 5 and won his first national title at age 6. He\u0026rsquo;s twice conquered the SuperNationals, an all-star-style tournament of the top U.S. players in grades K-12 that\u0026rsquo;s held every four years. After he won the Georgia State Championship in 2015, he became an International Master.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EA cherished memory for Gurevich? Meeting chess legend Garry Kasparov at age 11. \u0026ldquo;I had made it to the top board of the elementary school championship and Kasparov was making my ceremonial first move,\u0026rdquo; he remembers. \u0026ldquo;It was very inspiring to have the chance to talk to my chess idol so early in my chess career, and I ended up winning both of my games the next day and became the national champion.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EGurevich, who was nominated by both the College of Sciences and the College of Engineering for the Academic Recognition Day Award, is also a \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.nationalmerit.org\/s\/1758\/start.aspx?gid=2\u0026amp;pgid=61\u0022\u003ENational Merit Scholar\u003C\/a\u003E and a \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/apcentral.collegeboard.org\/about-ap\/awards\/scholar-awards\u0022\u003ENational AP Scholar\u003C\/a\u003E. He attended Georgia Tech as a \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/goldscholars.es.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003EPresident\u0026rsquo;s Gold Scholar.\u003C\/a\u003E During his time at the Institute, he received the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/undergradresearch.gatech.edu\/content\/presidents-undergraduate-research-awards\u0022\u003EPresidential Undergraduate Research Award (PURA)\u003C\/a\u003E, the\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.news.gatech.edu\/2019\/04\/22\/students-recognized-annual-honors-celebration\u0022\u003E College of Sciences\u0026rsquo; Roger M. Wartell and Stephen E. Brossette Award for Multidisciplinary Studies in Biology\u003C\/a\u003E, the A. Joyce Nickelson and John C. Sutherland Undergraduate Research Award, the School of Physics\u0026rsquo; Letson Undergraduate Research Scholarship, and the Institute for Bioengineering and Bioscience\u0026rsquo;s Petit Undergraduate Research Scholarship.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;Getting this award was wonderful and unexpected news,\u0026quot; Gurevich says. \u0026ldquo;It really means a lot to me to have been selected out of so many outstanding students at Georgia Tech, and I am very honored to have the results of my hard work recognized. I\u0026#39;m grateful for all of the support I have received from the Georgia Tech community, particularly my professors and advisors.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EGurevich has also tried to pass along his love of chess to younger students. He co-founded Chess Advantage, which provides after-school chess instruction and private coaching in the greater Atlanta area. He also wrote the Q\u0026amp;A column in \u003Cem\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.uschess.org\/content\/view\/7862\/131\/\u0022\u003EChess Life Kids\u003C\/a\u003E\u003C\/em\u003E, the publication of the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/new.uschess.org\/home\/\u0022\u003EUnited States Chess Federation (US Chess)\u003C\/a\u003E for age 12 and under, which has more than 10,000 subscribers.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EGurevich, who is set to graduate in May 2020, will pursue a Ph.D. in applied mathematics in the fall. \u0026ldquo;My goal is to teach and perform research as a professor, looking for new ways to use mathematical tools to advance our understanding of fields like physics and biology. My education at Georgia Tech has given me the opportunity to acquire a very broad skill set that is extremely valuable for an academic career.
