{"632474":{"#nid":"632474","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Join Ph.D. Career Exploration Group, Plan for the Future","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EArticle by Autumn Siebold\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EIf you\u0026rsquo;re halfway through your Ph.D.\u0026nbsp;but haven\u0026rsquo;t decided what to do when you graduate, you\u0026rsquo;re not alone.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;I didn\u0026rsquo;t know what career path I wanted to take yet, and I wanted to explore some more options,\u0026rdquo; said Myela Paige, a fourth-year Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering. \u0026ldquo;The career exploration group ended up being a great way to find more careers and discover things I wouldn\u0026rsquo;t have known I was otherwise interested in.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EClarence Anthony Jr., the assistant director of Graduate Career Development, created the Ph.D. Career Exploration Group for graduate students to explore their career plans.\u0026nbsp;The first group met once a week for an hour for three weeks to talk about their career interests. During the sessions, they\u0026nbsp;considered\u0026nbsp;their skills\u0026nbsp;and explored\u0026nbsp;where their majors could take them after graduation.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;The group offers\u0026nbsp;Georgia Tech Ph.D. students a chance to explore becoming professors and postdoctoral fellows, or nonacademic options like research and development, management consulting, technical consulting, or data science,\u0026rdquo; Anthony said.\u0026nbsp;\u0026ldquo;They have a chance to\u0026nbsp;explore their options, while also receiving support and feedback.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThis opportunity\u0026nbsp;is open to Ph.D. students from any year or major, and offers a confidential space to talk through your career plans.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;We did a lot of activities to help us slow down, figure out our priorities, and figure out what we wanted to do going forward,\u0026rdquo; said Benjamin Bray, a third-year Ph.D. in Computer Science. \u0026ldquo;For example, one of the activities that was most helpful to me was building a mind map of my interests to figure out some new paths I could take.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThis semester, students can sign up for the next Ph.D. Career Exploration group, which will meet Feb. 27, March 5, and March 12. \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/gatech.co1.qualtrics.com\/jfe\/form\/SV_bacXOCMppHqrxlj\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003ECheck out this link\u003C\/a\u003E to sign up and complete the pre-assessment survey.
