Situated on the border of Belgium, Luxembourg, and Germany, and only 90 minutes from Paris by train, Metz makes an ideal “home-base” for students wishing to explore new countries on the weekends. Past Georgia Tech-Lorraine students have visited more than 15 countries during their semester abroad. 

For students who would rather stay near campus over the weekends, the city offers a variety of activities, sights, and museums for students to enjoy, such as the Pompidou-Metz contemporary art museum, the Moselle River, the Metz Cathedral (which houses the largest expanse of stained glass in the world), the Porte des Allemands(a medieval bridge castle and city gate), Fort de Queleu (a 150-year-old fort used as an internment camp during World War II), and more. 

 “Every time I go downtown, I discover another nook or little cafe that makes me wish I had a little bit more time here,” said student Noa Margalit. 

Overall, Metz provides a familiar, safe, fun home for Georgia Tech-Lorraine students. It is busy enough to be exciting but quaint enough not to be overwhelming. The locals are used to the visiting students and are quick to engage in conversation, even in English, and to lend a helping hand or give directions when needed. It is a place where students can step out of their comfort zone, experience cultural immersion, and take their learning outside of the classroom.
