{"630110":{"#nid":"630110","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Georgia Tech\u2019s 100,000th Living Engineering Graduate ","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EA stroke of luck changed Oluwaferanmi Adeyemo\u0026rsquo;s entire life trajectory.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;My mother applied for the visa lottery system in Nigeria,\u0026rdquo; Adeyemo said. \u0026ldquo;She\u0026rsquo;d done it on a whim and ended up winning.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EKnown to friends and family as Feranmi, she says she was only 5 years old when her family packed up and moved to Illinois.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAs a student in Chicago, she excelled in math and science.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;I particularly loved chemistry,\u0026rdquo; she said.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EWhen it came time to apply to colleges, a teacher suggested that Adeyemo check out chemical engineering programs.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EShe applied to two top programs after an online search: MIT and Georgia Tech. She ended up being accepted to Tech and has not looked back.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;These past four years have been phenomenal,\u0026rdquo; Adeyemo said.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EShe undertook research as an undergraduate with Associate Professor Corey Wilson\u0026rsquo;s research lab that focuses on establishing a computational framework to translate understanding of the fundamental principles of biophysics and biochemistry. Through her research, Adeyemo worked with Harvard Medical School.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;It was so cool to see what we\u0026rsquo;ve worked on and how it could be applied to actual patients,\u0026rdquo; she said.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAnd during her years on campus, Adeyemo experienced firsthand the power of a Georgia Tech education.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;I had people reach out to me and ask me to interview for positions when they saw that I studied at Georgia Tech,\u0026rdquo; she explained.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ENow, having met the requirements for earning her bachelor\u0026rsquo;s degree, Adeyemo has become Georgia Tech\u0026rsquo;s 100,000th living engineering graduate.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;That\u0026rsquo;s so cool!\u0026rdquo; she exclaimed. \u0026ldquo;I\u0026rsquo;m really proud that I was able to stay here and make it through four years.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAdeyemo will now move to Maryland and work in the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab.
