Please visit cos.gatech.edu for further updates.\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/h3\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Ch4\u003EA Frontiers in Science Lecture and the 2020 Karlovitz Lecture by Moon Duchin, Tufts University\u003C\/h4\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe theory of random walks has found a fruitful application in electoral redistricting, by allowing us to sample from the partitions of a state into districts.\u0026nbsp; By comparing a plan to neutral alternatives, we can measure the extent of \u003Cem\u003Egerrymandering\u003C\/em\u003E\u0026mdash;when one party takes advantage of the authority to draw the lines.\u0026nbsp; Moon Duchin will discuss some surprisingly simple questions about graphs and geometry that can help us make advances in policy and civil rights.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EAbout the Speaker\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\r\n\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/tischcollege.tufts.edu\/people\/faculty\/moon-duchin\u0022\u003EMoon Duchin\u003C\/a\u003E is an Associate Professor of Mathematics and Senior Fellow in the\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/tischcollege.tufts.edu\/\u0022\u003EJonathan M. Tisch College of Civic Life at Tufts University\u003C\/a\u003E.\u0026nbsp;Her research in pure mathematics focuses on geometric group theory, low-dimensional topology, and dynamics.\u0026nbsp;She is also interested in the social studies of science, particularly the role of expertise, authority, intuition, and proof.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EShe founded the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/mggg.org\/\u0022\u003EMetric Geometry and Gerrymandering Group\u003C\/a\u003E to use geometry and computation to study gerrymandering, believing it to be a fundamental threat to democracy.\u0026nbsp; The redistricting lab uses tools from math, geography, and computing to study politics and policy.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EShe is a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society. In 2018, she was awarded a Guggenheim fellowship.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EDuchin\u0026rsquo;s Frontiers in Science Lecture is co-sponsored by the 14\u003Csup\u003Eth\u003C\/sup\u003E\u0026nbsp;Biennial Gathering for Gardener Conference.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EAbout the Karlovitz Lecture Series\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\r\nThe lecture is made possible by an endowment in memory of College of Sciences Dean Les Karlovitz, who served as dean from 1982 until 1989.
