Recently two undergraduate researchers she mentored won honors at scientific meetings.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EHooshmand is a senior research scientist working with Mostafa El-Sayed, professor in the School of Chemistry and Biochemistry. She does nanoparticle research, a fascinating field that offers countless opportunities for surprising discoveries.\u0026nbsp; The unique capacity of metallic nanostructures \u0026ndash; especially those made of silver and gold \u0026ndash; to concentrate electromagnetic fields, scatter electromagnetic radiation, or convert light energy into heat makes them versatile. They are suitable for many applications, including signal detection and amplification, solar cell, drug delivery, and photothermal therapy of cancer.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe research area has significant global impact and has\u0026nbsp;received major\u0026nbsp;attention\u0026nbsp;from\u0026nbsp;scientists, especially young research scholars.\u0026nbsp; Among them are students Hooshmand has mentored in the Georgia Tech Summer Undergraduate Research in Engineering\/Sciences \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/sure.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003E(SURE)\u003C\/a\u003E program: Peace Olaniran, a Georgia Tech biochemistry major, and Kelsey Walker, a chemistry major in Savannah State University.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EOlaniran and Walker conducted research that aims to advance nanoparticles\u0026rsquo; promise as tools to treat various cancers. Their work was funded also by the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/funding\/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=13646\u0022\u003ENational Science Foundation\u0026rsquo;s Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation (LSAMP)\u003C\/a\u003E and Intel.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EIn their research, they synthesized gold and silver nanoparticles of different sizes and shapes for potential use in cell imaging and drug delivery. The products were characterized by different techniques, including ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM).\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EIn 2018, Olaniran won second place for poster presentation in the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/sure.gatech.edu\/past-research-projects\u0022\u003E2018 SURE symposium\u003C\/a\u003E, held in Georgia Tech. In 2019, Walker won second place for oral presentation at the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/pslsamp.uga.edu\/conference\/conference-2019\/\u0022\u003E2019 STEM Innovators Conference,\u003C\/a\u003E held in the University of Georgia.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;It has been a great privilege to mentor Peace and Kelsey.
