62850 news 1290098982 1475896066 Senior computer science major Candace Mitchell was awarded the Undergraduate Woman of Distinction award at the 2010 Georgia Tech Women’s Leadership Conference.

Mitchell received the award in recognition of her impact on the Georgia Tech community. She was nominated for the award by Dana Randall, professor in the School of Computer Science.

“I have never encountered a student representative on a faculty and staff committee that has been more effective, prepared or concerned,” said Randall, who served with Mitchell on a search committee for the Institute’s vice president of diversity position. “But it is her commitment to change, and her devotion to making Georgia Tech a better place, that is most impressive.”

Mitchell is currently a fifth-year CS major doing research on improving security technology in grid databases through virtualization. She is active in the Georgia Tech community, most notably serving as president of Delta Sigma Theta sorority, community relations chair of TeamBuzz, Minority Educational Development freshman team coach, co-chair of the African-American Student Union, and a member of both the Women@CC and Minorities@CC student organizations in the College of Computing.
