The RERC on Technologies to Support for Successful Aging with Disability (RERC TechSAge) serves as a catalyst for a major shift in the understanding of successful aging with disability and subsequently in the design of home and community technologies.  The mission of the RERC is to apply universal design strategies to rehabilitation engineering R&D to prevent, minimize or reverse the disabling effects of age-related losses and contextual factors on the independence, health and participation of people who are aging with chronic conditions or long-term impairment. The RERC is conducting nine research, development, and training projects by taking full advantage of the capacity, experience, multidisciplinary diversity and interdisciplinary approach of the schools, research centers and laboratories at Georgia Tech, including CATEA, AMAC and GIS in CoA, Human Factors and Aging Lab and Sonification Lab in Psych, Awarehome and Interactive Media Technology Center in IPAT, HCI,  Healthcare Robotics Lab in BME, and HomeLab and Human Factors Lab in GTRI. 

TechSAge will be highlighted in the Technology Track day on Friday, November 12th.

Join us for our upcoming DATHA Talk on Fall Prevention by guest speaker Emma Harrington. Emma is the Director of Injury Prevention and Education at the Shepherd Center. Her talk will focus on aging and fall prevention and highlight the Shepherd Center's program for preventing initial brain and spinal cord injuries as well as secondary injuries.

The balance lies between the space of the qualitative and the quantitative, between the immeasurable and the scientific. How can technology not prescribe but rather leverage and amplify the articulation of the thoughtfully considered design artifact? Purpose of the Symposium: The purpose of this symposium is to continue this discussion and grow the intersection between industry issues and university initiatives.

As a member of the GA Tech community, you are invited to attend the DBL-Industry Symposium. Holders of a Buzzcard and registration (for headcount.) are invited at no cost. 

Background: Major gaps exist between the technologies and procedures becoming available in design and construction and those currently in use.  These gaps reflect the transformation in new practices now emerging, including those dealing with Building Information Modeling, interoperability, new methods of data capture and new methods of project delivery, among others. All companies are being challenged by .these new technologies. The challenge is made more difficult because the AEC industries have limited research and development capabilities, and still operate under increasingly obsolete craft and in-field practices.

The DBL has been formed six years ago to respond to this challenge. Universities have a potentially significant role to facilitate development, train and promote effective adoption of these new capabilities by leading industries. Realization of this contribution, however, poses multiple challenges: 

§ Materialize the significance and benefits of industry-university collaboration; 

§ Challenge the mindset of university faculty and industry management to engage in industry-related problems and opportunities;

§ Demonstrate that relations between businesses and universities generate true business benefits. 

Digital Building Laboratory (DBL)

The Digital Building Lab has been collaborating with industry organizations since 2010. It currently has fourteen industry Members that sponsor much of its work. The DBL is an umbrella organization, housed in the College of Architecture at Georgia Tech that brings together the resources of multiple schools and colleges to address new or emerging problems/opportunities in architecture, construction and fabrication. (The faculty currently involved in the DBL are listed on the DBL website, at: http://www.dbl.gatech.edu/. The DBL’s purpose is to promote and develop joint industry-university research advancing building design & construction. 

Georgia Tech in collaboration with Skanska is offering this unique certificate course for construction professionals. This new course is meant to provide an important foundation into the major uses of BIM, with focus on the needs of the contractor and fabricator.

BIM for Construction Management is a four-day immersion course dealing with: the organization of BIM data, its use in BIM tools during construction planning and execution, use of BIM models in time, space, and quality, their benefits and weaknesses. It includes in-person hands-on training in multiple BIM software applications, a session in field-related technologies and a project tour in applied technologies within the construction process.

This Course has been designed to provide a certificate program that addresses the foundational skills needed by BIM professionals at construction management firms. This four-day course at Georgia Tech provides a thorough, hands-on introduction to how BIM enables and offers new methods for many current activities regarding layout, planning, coordination, safety, quality, procurement, and related activities.

Erleen Hatfield is a Partner of Buro Happold, a global multi-disciplinary engineering consulting firm based in New York. She has experience in the structural design of a wide range of complex projects including sports facilities, high-rise, cultural, residential, and academic buildings. In addition, she teaches graduate architecture classes at Yale University and gives regular lectures at Pratt University.

Some of her notable projects include the World Trade Center Memorial Museum, The Tower at PNC, the Atlanta Falcons New Retractable Roof Stadium, the School of Management at Yale University, the Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln, Nebraska and the Abu Dhabi Media Zone.

She was honored by the Professional Women in Construction in 2013, named a Game Changer in 2014 and a Power Player in 2015 both by Sports Business Journal magazine.

As a Design Director for Perkins+Will, Manuel Cadrecha’s daily work is about crafting a unified design tone and orchestrating teams that elevate the possibilities for each project. Over a 35-year career, Manuel has become an ardent advocate for interdisciplinary design, driving an evolution towards a creative studio model that works across design scales and disciplines.  Born in Havana, Cuba, Manuel Cadrecha grew up in Madrid, Spain, and New York. He received his Masters in Architecture from Georgia Tech.  Manuel serves on Perkins+Will’s Board of Directors and lives in Atlanta.

Kate Orff presents Toward An Urban Ecology. SCAPE reconceives urban landscape design as a form of activism, demonstrating how to move beyond familiar and increasingly outmoded ways of thinking about environmental, urban, and social issues as separate domains; and advocating for the synthesis of practice to create a truly urban ecology. A range of participatory and science-based strategies will be depicted through the lens of office work, featuring projects, collaborators, and design methods that advance urban ecological design.

Kate Orff is the Founder of SCAPE. Kate focuses on retooling the practice of landscape architecture relative to uncertainty of climate change and fostering social life which she has explored through publications, activism, research, and projects. She is known for leading complex, creative, and collaborative work processes that advance broad environmental and social prerogatives.

Kate Orff was named a 2012 United States Artist Fellow, an Elle Magazine “Planet Fixer,” and shared SCAPE’s design methodologies at the International TEDWomen Conference in 2010. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Political and Social Thought from the University of Virginia with Distinction and earned a Master in Landscape Architecture from the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University. Kate is also the Director of Columbia University GSAPP’s Urban Design Program.

Marc Tsurumaki is the Principal and Founding Partner of LTL Architects, will present a selection of the firm’s recent work in relation to their research on the role of section in architecture.  Culminating in the publication of ‘Manual of Section,’ the lecture will address the history and potentials of section as a generative technique, focusing on it’s evolution from early modernism forward, and on sectional strategies as they are deployed in LTL’s built and speculative designs.

Lewis.Tsurumaki.Lewis (LTL Architects PLLC) is an award-winning architecture partnership founded in 1997 with Paul Lewis and David J. Lewis and located in New York City. LTL Architects was the recipient of the 2007 National Design Award from the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum and was selected as one of six American architectural firms featured in the U.S. Pavilion at the 2004 Venice Architecture Biennale.  Their work is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Heinz Architectural Center at the Carnegie Museum of Art. The principals are co-authors of the monographs Intensities (Princeton Architectural Press, 2012) and Opportunistic Architecture (Princeton Architectural Press, 2008) along with Situation Normal....Pamphlet Architecture #21 (Princeton Architectural Press, 1998).  Their newest publication, entitled Manual of Section, was just released in August of 2016.

Students in the School of Industrial Design will have just finished a 3-day design BLITZ -- a fast-paced exercise to learn skills to take their creativity to the next level. What’s the design challenge? Given one pumpkin, an inspiring designer, and an iterative design process, how can they:

• Truly exploit the material of the pumpkin?
• Capitalize on the day/night transformation?
• Reinterpret a theme?
• Craft with precision?

Thursday evening, spectators will be able to choose a best-in-show from 60 pumpkins with a monetary vote of a quarter or more. The winner will be announced at 8:30 that evening. The money will help to fund future IDSA student projects.

The Art and Architecture in Greece and Italy study abroad program gives students the opportunity to explore the foundations of European art and architecture with a major focus on artifacts, buildings, and cities. The program is unique in that it is open to all majors at both undergraduate and graduate levels and occurs entirely on-site with no classrooms. Over seven weeks of travel (with weekends free), the program includes visits to Santorini, Crete, Mycenae, Olympia, Delphi, Athens, Acropolis, Bassai, Epidauros, Taranto, Metaponto, Paestum, Pompeii, Sorrento, Rome, the Colosseum, the Pantheon, Hadrian's Villa, Michelangelo's Campidoglio, St. Peter's Basilica, Florence, Brunelleschi's Dome, Siena, Vicenza, Palladio's Villa Rotunda, Venice, and more. Four courses in the History of Art and Architecture are taught on site as well as in museums by three faculty from the College of Design, offering nine humanities and three elective credits. The program has been offering Georgia Tech students a chance to explore this world annually since 1993 for more than 23 years. In her talk she will discuss how technology can optimize the use of adjustable ergonomic office furnishings to reduce pain, fatigue, and productivity. The results of a pilot study will be presented. These include 1) the development of instrumentation to measure how people use their equipment and 2) trends in the relationship between equipment use and pain or fatigue experienced by the user. Implications for future research in this area will also be discussed.

The research forums are a place for the College of Design community and our friends across the campus to experience the design- and technology-focused research at Georgia Tech.

From music technology to product design; from assistive technology to healthcare; from architecture to city planning, we explore the many ways technology can solve critical problems for the way we live.

Claire Weisz is an architect, an urbanist, and a founding principal of WXY. With her partners Mark Yoes, Layng Pew, and Adam Lubinsky, Claire focuses on innovative approaches to public space, structures, and cities. 

WXY’s architecture and planning work for cities and communities is centered around the art of re-imagining infrastructure. The studios’ award winning work has been published broadly and has been recognized for its architectural approach to the infrastructure of place. In addition to design awards from the AIA, ASLA and APA, WXY was also awarded with the Emerging Voices and Architectural League Prize from The Architectural League of New York.

Claire Weisz co-founded The Design Trust for Public Space. She is a faculty member at the New York University Wagner Graduate School of Public Service and a visiting critic of Urban Design at the Cornell University College of Architecture, Art, and Planning. She received her professional degree from the University of Toronto with honors and a Master of Architecture from Yale University.

The TechSAge Design Competition 2017 seeks to inspire talented students to develop innovative technology-enabled design solutions for the aging population, especially considering the varied abilities and disabilities of older adults. Enter individually or as a team to the competition with a unique submission under one of the following categories:

HEALTH AT HOME: designed technology solutions for the home environment that support health and healthy activities in support to the healthcare system.
SOCIAL CONNECTEDNESS: designed technology solutions to encourage communication, connectedness with people and social activities.
ACTIVE LIFESTYLE: designed technology solutions to promote physical and cognitive activities, and how activities can promote healthy lifestyles.
COMMUNITY MOBILITY: designed technology solutions to facilitate access to activities and/or locations.

Designed technology solutions may be products and/or systems including but not limited to ambient technologies, wearable devices, mobile applications, assistive robots—in the broad areas of design and computation, including industrial design, interaction design, graphic design, human-computer interaction, human factors, software engineering, and artificial intelligence, to mention a few. Each category will select the top three designed technologies to compete in phase 2 of the competition for the first, second and third place.

A talented group of experts on product design, universal design, technology design, human-computer interaction, robotics, design research methods, and aging, to mention a few, will evaluate the submissions.

The competition is organized by the TechSAge Research Engineering Rehabilitation Center (RERC) at the Georgia Institute of Technology, and sponsored by the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR).

Thom Mayne founded Morphosis in 1972 as a collective architectural practice engaged in cross-disciplinary research and design; today, the firm is based in Los Angeles, New York, and Shanghai, with projects built world-wide. Framing his lecture at Georgia Tech against this backdrop, Thom will trace the development of some of the major themes and interests that have defined Morphosis over forty years of practice, from their emergence in early Morphosis projects and explorations, to their realization in the diverse scales and project types that make up the firm’s current work. In each project, an examination of the built form reveals how the design process begins with and shaped by the specific questions we choose to acknowledge in our own investigation.

The Ambassador’s lecture will highlight the inspiring launch of the first international treaty recognizing the rights with persons with disabilities. The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) just celebrated the 10th anniversary of its adoption by the United Nations. 

Ambassador Gallegos was a member of the UN Committee against Torture and President of the International Rehabilitation Foundation; currently Chairman of the Global UN Partnership for Inclusive Information and Communication Technologies (G3ict). Ambassador Gallegos is also a board member for the Special Olympics.

This symposium addresses the concept of phantasmagoria in architecture, unearthing its various manifestations in the contemporary culture of spectacle. Participants from a variety of fields at the intersection of architecture, technology, and political philosophy will examine the history of phantasmagoria from the late eighteenth century to the present and the place it occupies in the writings of Marx, Benjamin, Adorno, and others. More specifically, participants will discuss its role in analyses of capitalist commodity fetishism where, along with the notions of the spectral and the fantastic, it is used to question, and occasionally to subvert, the relationship between ‘reality’ and ‘illusion’. Special attention will be paid to the present-day significance of phantasmagoria in an age of tele-technological and communicative capitalism. Just as new technologies, according to Benjamin, reorganized the human sensorium in the 19th century, turning Paris into the interior space of the flaneur, so technical innovations are reconfiguring the most basic conditions of urban experience in our time, generating new forms of ‘hyper-mediated’ subjectivity that transform the city through the force of psychic shock. By bringing a variety of perspectives to bear on this one concept, the symposium will attempt to frame a general critique of the culture of contemporary capitalism.

The opening of the Architecture Building, designed by the firm of Harold Bush-Brown, J. Herbert “Doc” Gailey and P. M. Heffernan, the first modern architectural school building in the nation, and the formal initiation of programs of study in Industrial Design and City Planning.

The building opened on September 20, 1952 and in his opening address the then director Harold Bush-Brown said:

And if the School of Architecture at Tech is able to give its future graduates the kind of preparation, which will enable them to help create a better environment for our people, no expenditure of money will have been mis-spent. We need and we can have better homes and better places in which to work, better products of industry, and above all better cities and towns and rural communities.

The 60^th Anniversary Celebrations will begin by reproducing exactly an exhibition from 1955 A Half Century of Architectural Education which illustrated the work of graduates in architecture from the first the fifty years. All the panels have survived and present a grand view of the ambitions for architecture in the 50’s: and there are familiar names.

And at the same time we will unveil the restoration of the original Architecture Library where much of the woodwork has remained hidden, but untouched for thirty years.  I see this as the initial phase in what I hope will be a plan to completely restore the East Architecture Building.

The celebration will continue with a request that will go to all our alumni in Industrial Design, City & Regional Planning and Architecture from 1952 till the present. It will ask you to submit a favorite example of your work, which will form the basis for three exhibitions to be held during the spring semester. All work submitted will be placed in a digital archive - available for all to see - and become an ongoing repository for the creative work of the College.

A most important consequence of all this is to recover the values and ideals that have made this College strong and influential over so many years.

Laura Hollengreen, an Associate Professor in the School of Architecture, will speak on 'Defining Artifact and Context in Gothic Architecture:  Why It's Not So Obvious'

This talk will discuss the “edges” of the Gothic cathedral.  Cathedral buildings are big and their walls meet the ground solidly, so how and why are the boundaries of the artifact in fact less definite than they appear?  Meanwhile, the setting for such buildings appears to be consistently urban but "context" can be variously construed even within the restricted realms of urban form and spatial practice.  The signal example of the Cathedral of Notre Dame at Chartres will provide material for a thumbnail case study of these challenges to interpretation.

If you have ever wondered what goes on way over at the northwest corner of campus across from Rocky Mountain Pizza, now is your chance to find out!  Join us on April 17 as faculty, staff, and students in the Center for Assistive Technology and Environmental Access (CATEA), Aware Home, Happy Healthy Home Class, and the Wireless RERC team up to present the latest research and design projects to promote the health, active living, and societal participation of people of all ages and abilities. 

Explore current research projects in monitoring wheelchair usage, home care robotics, accessible aquariums, long-term housing, enhancing science, technology, engineering, and math education in Georgia’s high schools and universities, the "Tag Talker" project, the Design and Technologies for Healthy Aging research group, the "Happy Healthy Homes" class, and much, much more.

Karen Milchus, Research Engineer, CATEA

Karen Milchus will speak Thursday, October 28 at the College of Architecture Research Forum from 11:00 to 12:00 in the Architecture Library. The COA Research Forum provides an informal setting for the Georgia Tech community to learn about research within the College of Architecture. Forums are free and open to the public and participants are invited to explore ideas and identify opportunities for collaboration. All talks are held in the Architecture Library from 11 a.m. to noon on the last Thursday of August through April. Talks are 30-to-45 minutes followed by questions and discussion.

Karen Milchus is co-director of the national Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center (RERC) on Workplace Accommodations, funded by NIDRR. She specializes in identifying and providing educational and vocational accommodations to youth and adults with disabilities, with a particular focus on computer access solutions. Related to her interest in workplace accommodations, Ms. Milchus is the PI for a grant to develop an expert system to recommend workplace accommodations, recently finished work on an NSF project that investigated the accommodation needs of teachers with disabilities, and was the PI for CATEA's work on Tech Connections, a NIDRR-funded information dissemination project on assistive technology for rehabilitation counselors. Related to her interest in educational accommodations, Ms. Milchus has led projects supported by the National Science Foundation to disseminate information on how to make science experiments accessible to students with disabilities. Prior to joining CATEA in 1994, Ms. Milchus worked as a Rehabilitation Technologist at the University of Wisconsin-Stout in what is now the Assistive Technology and Assessment Center. While there, she co-authored Wisconsin's procedural manual on transporting students with special needs. Her Master's research was on providing supplementary force feedback to the upper extremity neuroprosthesis developed by the Cleveland FES Center. Ms. Milchus has certification as an Assistive Technology Practitioner (ATP) and is active in RESNA.

The Center for Assistive Technology and Environmental Access (CATEA) is a multidisciplinary research center devoted to enhancing the lives of people with all levels of ability and functional limitations through the development and application of assistive and universally designed technologies. CATEA brings together the diverse talents of many different types of engineers, scientists, clinicians, and other professionals.

This course will introduce the concept and history of universal design (UD), and will discuss similarities and differences between UD and specialized design. The Principles of Universal Design will be introduced. The course will provide information regarding universal and accessible design for use of and interpretive interaction in a variety of public spaces, including recreational, entertainment, cultural, healthcare, and interactive venues.

A Symposium featuring presentations by Georgia Tech faculty and staff Cindy Bowden, Carrie Bruce, Ruth Dusseault, John Peponis, and Pegah Zamani, and a keynote lecture on designing for The Smithsonian Institution by John Folan, Associate Professor, School of Architecture, Carnegie Mellon University and Senior Project Architect/Senior Project Designer, National Air and Space Museum Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Dulles Center.

Course Requirements
