Everyone seems to have advice, but what strategies are really going to help you find success at Georgia Tech?\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EWith the end of the semester in sight, we wanted to take some of the guesswork out of the process and went straight to the people who know \u0026mdash;\u0026nbsp;your fellow Tech grad students. Read on for their top nine tips and our resource recommendations to help you put their advice into action.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Col\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003E\u0026ldquo;Don\u0026rsquo;t isolate yourself. Go out with the students and postdocs in your department,\u0026nbsp;or get a group together and take a weekend drive. Don\u0026#39;t just do this once. Also, be sure to attend the annual Career, Research, and Innovation Development Conference for graduate students Jan. 27-28, 2020.\u003C\/em\u003E\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003E\u0026ldquo;Set aside some time every week for social activities, just like you would set aside time to study or go to class. For example, join an Atlanta community group like the Atlanta Bicycle Coalition, or plan a weekly TV show\/movie night with people from your lab.\u0026rdquo;\u003Cbr \/\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cstrong\u003E\u0026ndash; Rebecca Berge, Business Administration master\u0026rsquo;s student\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cem\u003EOur Recommendation: Aside from the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.atlantabike.org\/\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003EAtlanta Bicycle Coalition\u003C\/a\u003E and \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.meetup.com\/cities\/us\/ga\/atlanta\/social\/\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003Eother community groups\u003C\/a\u003E, there are plenty of fun things to do with your friends right on campus \u0026mdash; like visiting\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/studentcenter.gatech.edu\/tech-rec\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003ETech Rec\u003C\/a\u003E in the Student Center. There\u0026rsquo;s bowling, video games, and it\u0026rsquo;s free for all students on Mondays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.\u003C\/em\u003E\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003E\u0026ldquo;Develop a passion for your research early on. You\u0026rsquo;re going to be working with that topic for years, so you really want it to be something that drives you. Make sure your topic is something you\u0026rsquo;re passionate about by talking about it to others. If you can have fun explaining what you\u0026rsquo;re doing to someone else, chances are it\u0026rsquo;s something you\u0026rsquo;ll enjoy long term.\u0026rdquo;\u003Cbr \/\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cstrong\u003E\u0026ndash; William Sealy, Robotics Ph.D. student\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cem\u003EOur Recommendation: Learn how to effectively share your research with others by signing up for the annual \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/grad.gatech.edu\/3MT\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003EThree Minute Thesis Competition\u003C\/a\u003E. Students who participate are challenged to summarize their research into a three-minute presentation that anyone could understand (a skill that will last you long after you finish your degree program). To get an idea of what the competition entails, come to the\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/grad.gatech.edu\/3mt\/schedule\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003Efinal round of the 2019 competition on Thursday, Nov. 14, at 6 p.m.\u003C\/a\u003E\u003C\/em\u003E\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003E\u0026ldquo;Try to get involved with an organization on campus, it\u0026#39;ll help you meet new people. There are so many cool, multidisciplinary projects going on in other departments that don\u0026#39;t get advertised. These symposiums offer a chance to present your research and learn about other projects. For example, the School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering holds theirs in February, while the School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences holds theirs in March. Typically, you can find this information on your school\u0026rsquo;s events page.\u003C\/em\u003E\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003E\u0026ldquo;Make sure you enjoy what Tech and Atlanta have to offer, both academically and for personal enrichment. Your best resources are your own feet, your eyes, and your ears.
