SCC internships are funded by a generous gift from Microsoft Corporation to advance students’ experiences working on real-life problems in a community environment as a way to apply their skills and improve the lives of residents.

We work with higher education institutions in Georgia, such as Valdosta State University and AUC Data Science Initiative to open the internship opportunity to both Georgia Tech and other Georgia college students. Each community opportunity will place interns in pairs (1 Georgia Tech student and 1 Georgia college student) to work together on a project. The aim is to bring students together with complementary skillsets, experiences, and expertise so that together they can learn from each other and leverage their joint work for cross-learning and co-creation with the community. Description:

Lack of connectivity between jobs and affordable housing has a significant impact on regional economic development. The Brookings Institution ranked Atlanta 91st out of the largest 100 metro areas in terms of share of accessible jobs via public transit, and the Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) found that there was a spatial mismatch of jobs and housing in the metro region and further has included Hartsfield as one of the regional centers (10,000 jobs or more, in approximately 4 square miles). With focus on Atlanta’s Aerotropolis (“airport city”, namely the broader airport area along with the surrounding municipalities), the objective of this research is to provide city planners with recommendations for bridging the spatial mismatch between low-income employees at the Hartsfield-Jackson Airport and the broader Aerotropolis Atlanta Community Improvement Districts (AACIDs) through improved public transportation. The level of complexity, necessary understanding, and scoping for this problem has become the opportunity to define a collaboration “nexus” between Georgia Tech’s College of Design and the School of Aerospace Engineering, effectively bringing together ideas and methods from urban design and systems engineering, respectively. Driven by demographic and socioeconomic impact analysis of spatial mismatch, this joint effort has been relying on urban form design and mobility modeling techniques to explore solution alternatives through scenario-based use cases. Enabled by integrated Digital Twin technologies, scenarios that model population growth, impact of disruption (e.g., COVID-19 pandemic), and incorporation of transportation technology have been explored by multidisciplinary student teams. In this webinar, we provide an overview of this unique collaboration and its outcomes, as the result of fostering partnerships with community stakeholders (such as the AACIDs, Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, MARTA, and members of the surrounding municipalities). Besides community-level efforts, on the academic side this initiative brought the introduction of the Smart Cities Workshop Class SCW (CP8873/AE8803-SCW), launched in Fall 2020, as a cross-discipline elective course, offered to graduate students on both academic majors.

In this presentation, Dr. Montreuil will emphasize the impactful interplay between supply chains and pandemics, across the world and in each locality. The impact of collectively improving pandemic supply chain readiness and response in each of the five world states - healthy, outbreak, epidemics, pandemics, and recovery - will be highlighted.

The focus will be on critical and essential supply chains to demonstrate the capital importance of supply chains in fighting and surviving a pandemics, as revealed by the covid19 crisis.

• Critical supply chains support the fight against the pandemic disease by supporting the booming demand for testing kits, masks, respirators, etc., to hospitals and health centers.
• Essential supply chains provide the food, health products and goods necessary to ensure survival, quality of life and recovery capability of pandemic-affected populations and economies, notably subject to distancing and containment measures.

Key avenues for collectively and comprehensively enabling effective and efficient pandemic supply chain readiness and response in each of the world states will be presented. These avenues combine common-sense pragmatic practices to leading-edge concepts and technologies, notably based on Artificial Intelligence and the Physical Internet. They notably enable:

• Critical and essential supply chain visibility and predictability;
• Smart fair decisions relative to critical and essential product allocation, deployment, and transportation;
• Keeping a healthy and efficient supply chain workforce;
• Repurposing supply chains and facilities to provide boost in critical and essential product availability;
• Vector-free logistics eliminating disease propagation through goods and food production, packaging, distribution and delivery.

The presentation results from the interdisciplinary collaboration of 28 professors from Georgia Tech Supply Chain & Logistics Institute.

In this talk, he will discuss about the fundamentals of materials, mechanics, and electronics to develop soft wearable systems and the examples of applications in smart healthcare, smart human-machine interfaces, and smart therapeutics. He will also talk about his vision to apply this wearable technology for smart and connected first responders.

Dr. Yeo is an Assistant Professor in the George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering and Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology. His research focuses on the areas of nanoengineering, advanced soft materials, machine learning, and bio-electromechanical systems, with an emphasis on soft wearable biosensors and bioelectronics. Dr. Yeo received his PhD in mechanical engineering and genome sciences at the University of Washington, Seattle in 2011. From 2011-2013, he worked as a postdoctoral research fellow at the Beckman Institute and Frederick Seitz Materials Research Center at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

"Importance of Investing in Rural Transit in Georgia "

Georgia has the sixth largest rural population in the United States. A growing proportion of rural population is older and is in need of increasing transit service in these areas. Given the current pandemic and the subsequent economic crisis, we will discuss the importance of investing in rural transit in Georgia. We will provide estimates of economic costs and benefits of existing transit services and we will highlight the gaps in transit service, which need to be addressed for the state to better serve Georgia’s rural population.

The Smart Community Corps (SCC) is the first statewide program of its kind. The program places Georgia Tech students into municipal governments to support smart community projects.  The Smart Cities and Inclusive Innovation (SCI2) began this program to give Georgia Tech students access to real-life civic experience during the summer semester.

SCC is a paid full-time (40 hours/week) internship over the summer semester funded by SCI2 for civic-minded Georgia Tech students dedicated to creating livable, and equitable communities through implementing smart technologies and data analytics. Interns are placed in our communities and work “on site” as part of the project team alongside our community partners for 10 weeks from approximately mid-May to the beginning of August. 

The Smart Community Corps internship is a joint collaboration with the Georgia Tech Center for Serve-Learn-Sustain (SLS), the Center for Career Discovery & Development (C2D2), and the Student Government Association (SGA). Through this partnership our interns will have access to professional mentorship through SLS program and educational seminars to Introduce students to theories of grassroots sustainability innovation.

Georgia Tech and the Curiosity Lab at Peachtree Corners are collaborating to jump-start research into the possible uses and infrastructure needs of autonomous vehicles in community and business settings. The collaboration draws on Georgia Tech’s expertise as a leading research university in the smart cities ecosystem and uses Curiosity Lab’s 1.5-mile autonomous vehicle test track. Owned by the City of Peachtree Corners, Curiosity Lab is an intelligent mobility and smart city laboratory that provides a unique real-world environment for testing innovative research concepts.

The intent of the Autonomous Transportation and Connected Roads (ATCR) Seed Grant solicitation is to stimulate novel fundamental or applied research ideas and collaborative exploration in the Autonomous Transportation field using Peachtree Corners’ Curiosity Lab infrastructure. Proposals addressing topics related to autonomous vehicle/transportation research and not exceeding $100,000 will be selected for funding. Proposals must also demonstrate potential impact and evidence of future funding opportunities. Interdisciplinary teams are encouraged but not required. See the links on the right for the complete ATCR Seed Grant solicitation, cover/budget sheet template, and supplemental information about the Curiosity Lab test bed.

Description:

The Atlanta Map Room is a public space for creating interpretive maps of the city, from a combination of contemporary data, historical documents, and personal experiences. These maps are large-scale physical artifacts, collaboratively-made, and meant for exhibition. The Atlanta Map Room builds upon the recent success of the St. Louis Map Room, a project lead by artist Jer Thorp in conjunction with the Center of Creative Arts.

Our team is collaborating with Thorp to develop a unique iteration of the project in Atlanta, meant to explore invisible tensions in the city, between its rapid development as a commercial hub and its long history as a center for civil rights and culture in the Southeast. The overarching goal of the Atlanta Map Room is to investigate what it means to visualize civic dialog around data. How can the seemingly mundane details of property tax assessments, building permits, and community surveys become the source materials for acts of collaborative creative expression?

Moderator:

Yanni Loukissas is an Assistant Professor of Digital Media in the School of Literature, Media, and Communication at Georgia Tech, where he directs the Local Data Design Lab. His research is focused on helping creative people think critically about the social implications of emerging technologies. His forthcoming book, All Data Are Local: Thinking Critically in a Data-Driven Society (MIT Press, 2019), is addressed to a growing audience of practitioners who want to work with unfamiliar sources both effectively and ethically. He is also the author of Co-Designers: Cultures of Computer Simulation in Architecture (Routledge, 2012) and a contributor to Simulation and its Discontents (MIT Press, 2009). Before coming to Georgia Tech, he was a lecturer at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, where he co-coordinated the Program in Art, Design and the Public Domain. He was also a principal at metaLAB, a research project of the Harvard Berkman Center for Internet and Society. He has taught at Cornell, MIT, and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts. Originally trained as an architect at Cornell, he subsequently attended MIT, where he received a Master of Science and a PhD in Design and Computation. He also completed postdoctoral work at the MIT Program in Science, Technology and Society.

Steve Downs is the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s chief technology and strategy officer. In this role, he focuses on the practice of program strategy and on the alignment of the Foundation’s technology strategy and operations with its organizational directions. RWJF’s pursuit of a Culture of Health requires an approach to strategy that is highly flexible and adaptive. In his current role, Downs works with his colleagues to institutionalize an approach to program strategy that is based on the integration of learning, co-creation, and reflection into the processes of strategy development and ongoing strategy assessment and adaptation.

Since being appointed chief technology and information officer in 2011, Downs’ goal has been to ensure that RWJF staff have the resources they need to practice philanthropy at the highest level. He has emphasized technology directions—namely mobility and social CRM—that encourage informal knowledge-sharing, data-informed decision-making, and peer-to-peer engagement.

Since joining RWJF in 2002, Downs’ career at RWJF has proceeded along two parallel paths: management and programming. Along his management path, he served as the first team leader of the RWJF Pioneer portfolio, helping to shape the portfolio’s direction and initial body of work. From 2007 to 2011, Downs served as the assistant vice president of the Health Group. In this position, he worked with the senior vice president of the Health Group to oversee the Foundation’s strategies and investments in the areas of childhood obesity, public health, tobacco control, and support for vulnerable populations. He also played a key role in helping to shape and articulate the Foundation’s vision for transitioning to a “Web 2.0” philanthropy, one based on values of openness, participation, and decentralization.

Driverless cars and connected technology are making headlines across the country. What does this really mean for our future?

At this IPaT Thursday Think Tank, we’ll learn which metro Atlanta communities and companies are, at this moment, testing vehicles that drive themselves and installing “smart” infrastructure. Plus, we’ll look at the potential impact on the ways our communities are mapped, vehicle ownership, ethics, and equity. When tech advances, who benefits?

We’ll listen to an episode of the What’s Next ATL podcast from the Atlanta Regional Commission focusing on connected tech, and then host Kate Sweeney will lead an informal Q&A/open discussion with Debra Lam, Jason Borenstein, and David Haynes.

Jason Borenstein, Ph.D., is the Director of Graduate Research Ethics Programs and Associate Director of the Center for Ethics and Technology.

The Institute for People and Technology (IPaT) brings together interdisciplinary Georgia Tech researchers to develop technology that transforms people’s lives. While we often highlight researchers and their technologies, who are the people most impacted by these innovations? For example, the elderly couple who can remain independent at home thanks to a technology developed at Georgia Tech.

Through photographic portraits and written and audio narratives, IPaT, in partnership with the Georgia Tech Office of the Arts, the Georgia Tech Library, and the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) will share the stories of everyday Georgians, their challenges, and the impact of our research in addressing those challenges. We’ll then showcase these portraits and stories during a public exhibition in Fall 2018, and the project will be featured online with support from IMLS.

At this week’s IPaT Thursday Think Tank we’ll brainstorm ideas for profiles and stories, and meet some of the people participating in the project.

We’re looking for:

Smart City Expo Atlanta is the first, and only, U.S. edition of Smart City Expo World Congress, the world’s leading conference and expo on smart cities and smart urban solutions.

Hosted annually in Barcelona since 2011, Smart City Expo World Congress has globally expanded to Brazil, Turkey, Japan, Mexico and Argentina, and now to the U.S through Smart City Expo Atlanta.

At Smart City Expo Atlanta, members of the U.S. public sector, innovators, entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, and industry leaders will discuss how social and economic mobility, equitable infrastructure, and human capital are being prioritized in the new “smart city,” one defined by digital transformation, artificial intelligence, early-stage investments, and other civic innovations and solutions.

The Beyond Smart Symposium will bring together interdisciplinary scholars to reflect on the issues of researching smart city deployments and projects. Some of the questions we will consider are: What comes after 'smart' in the assessment of technology deployments and analytics capabilities? How do we address equity, inclusion, and sustainability in the smart cit? and What can smaller or less dense regions learn as they move toward implementing a smart agenda?

About the Speaker

Martin Keller became the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s (NREL) Director on November 30, 2015. NREL is the Department of Energy’s primary laboratory for energy efficiency and renewable energy research and development. NREL is operated for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) by Alliance for Sustainable Energy, LLC (Alliance). Martin also serves as the President of Alliance.

Martin joined Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in July 2006, and on July 1, 2009, ORNL appointed Martin to the role of Associate Laboratory Director. On November 1, 2010, ORNL formed a new directorate, Energy and Environmental Sciences, and asked Martin to take the lead. As Associate Laboratory Director, Martin was responsible for the energy, biological and environmental research programs at ORNL, supported by DOE, the EPA, and the NIH. Martin served as the Founding Director of the DOE BioEnergy Science Center, and, before being named Associate Laboratory Director at ORNL, he served as the Director of the Biosciences Division.

In June 1994, Martin joined the publicly traded biotechnology company, Diversa Corporation, as a consultant, to build and develop the microbiology expertise within Diversa. In 1996, Martin joined Diversa full-time, and between 1996 and 2006, he held a series of research management positions within the Diversa Corporation.

Martin received his Ph.D. in Microbiology from the University of Regensburg, Germany. In 2013, Martin was elected as Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

We will also be presenting the work of a Georgia Tech Studio class on Smart Varnasi.

Varnasi is a holy city resting on the banks of the Ganges, home to 1.4 million residents and host to over 6 million pilgrims and tourists each year. With a history dating back over 3,000 years, there are challenges of updating this city to meet the needs of its future residents while preserving its rich culture and heritage are intricate.

Together with Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur and Indian Institute of Technology, Varanasi, Georgia Tech have been working on a semester-long studio course. The class is working to develop and implement smart city updates that will best serve the people of Varanasi through transportation solutions, environmental protection, and economic stimulation.

Join us for the Georgia Smart Spring Growth Workshop on Friday, March 29, 2019.

The aim of the workshop is to bring together key stakeholders from local governments, government associations, industry, and academic leaders to explore potential smart community initiatives, opportunities, and collaboration. Panalists from Georgia Tech, ATDC, ULI Atlanta, AARP, and GENERATOR will discuss how Smart Cities can drive economic development. The inaugural Georgia Smart Communities Challenge winners along with corresponding Georgia Tech researchers will present their current project status and answer your questions.

Communities interested in learning about and applying for the 2019 Georgia Smart Communities Challenge will be involved in a hands on proposal development workshop in the afternoon.

This workshop is intended for:

• City and County Officials
• Local government associations
• Industry experts and academic practitioners
• Nonprofit and philanthropic organizations

The term ‘smart cities’ was first used in its modern sense in the 1990s. Yet, as of today, no city around the globe can claim to have successfully integrated a holistic smart cities approach.

One explanation is that there has been a disconnect between smart cities technologies and the residents of the communities these technologies are supposed to serve. 

Collectively, the governments behind each community are working to address challenges across mobility, sustainability, accessibility for lower income citizens, and more. Though each of these areas have different desired outcomes, the approach is near identical: it starts with data.

For governments to understand where they need to apply smart solutions, they need to have the data in two areas. First, they need to see what their city looks like from a data-driven point of view – e.g. where’s the traffic, where are the delays, where is the energy being spent, where is the flooding happening? Second, they need to have the opinion data of their residents – e.g. what are their most pressing problems, what matters most to their well-being, is the proposed solution adequate?

This second component has often been overlooked to favor a technology-centric way.

The Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) will hold a two-day Smart Cities Dialogue on May 7-8, 2019 to help frame the debate on this paradigm. It will discuss how to develop smarter communities that understand urban life primarily as a social, and only secondarily as a technical and logistic ecosystem. Topics will capture inclusive engagement, smaller communities that may not see themselves as part of the “smart cities” effort, social and socioeconomic mobility as well as connections within economic regions.

In addition to bringing together key national and international stakeholders from local governments as well as industry and academic leaders for a series of insightful discussions, attendees will have the opportunity to experience ‘research in action’ and discover some of Georgia Tech’s latest solutions in this domain.

This conference is intended for government representatives, smart cities experts and researchers, policy makers as well as industry leaders interested in this topic and in accessing Georgia Tech’s cross-disciplinary R&D capabilities.

Unlike past forms of aviation, UAM will be deeply interwoven into the fabric of cities and regions. Aircraft must be low noise to avoid annoyance, vertiports must be located in a way consistent with land use regulations, and issues such as equity of access must be addressed.  As a consumer and producer of data, UAM will be a part of the landscape of future smart cities.
 
In this workshop, we will collectively address the question, “How can Atlanta and all of Georgia participate in the economic opportunity of UAM?” A premise of our discussion will be that the aircraft and technologies that enable UAM offer potential not only for urban operations but also for rural areas; hence our focus will be on urban and regional air mobility. For example, rapid commuting by air may enable increased wages for rural residents and also encourage rural growth and development, as people and businesses disaggregate from urban cores to outlying areas. Attendees will include business, government, and academic stakeholders from Atlanta and neighboring rural communities in Georgia, as well as representatives from NASA and companies participating in the nascent UAM industry.

Rapid urban growth is impacting not just the landscapes of cities, but also the local air quality, and the need for energy, water, and other resources. Although cities only occupy a mere 2% of the Earth’s surface area, they are responsible for nearly 70% of the global energy consumption, which is projected to increase 1.6 times from 2010 to 2040. This growth will be the result of increasing urban area populations, and infrastructure facilities such as high rise residential, commercial buildings, and data centers. Much of the energy used in urban areas is ultimately converted to anthropogenic waste heat released to the urban canopy, contributing to the growth of urban heat islands (UHI). The annual mean air temperature of a city of 1 million can be 1-3°C warmer than its surroundings, with the evening differences as high as 12°C. With extreme heat accounting for more weather-related deaths each year than any other form of extreme weather, urban populations are disproportionately impacted by rising temperatures. The UHI further results in increased summertime energy usage, higher air-conditioning costs, increased air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, as well as degradation of water quality. A renewed sense of urgency exists to mitigate adverse thermal effects on urban climate due to the combination of greenhouse gas-driven warming at the global scale, and UHI-related warming at the local-regional scale.

This workshop will bring together various national and international stakeholders to identify urban thermal climate challenges, and ways of addressing these. Invited talks from academia, industry, and national labs will be complemented by breakout sessions on selected topics. A world in which cars can drive themselves is coming quicker than you may realize. What would this world look like? If you believe the optimists, driverless cars will increase mobility, bring environmental benefits and renew the relationship between suburbs and cities. If you believe the pessimists, driverless cars will only exacerbate our current problems.

Overview

A digital twin is defined as a…"pairing of virtual and physical worlds [that] allows analysis of data and monitoring of systems to head off problems before they occur, prevent downtime, and even plan for the future using simulations.” (Forbes, 2017).

As such a digital twin’s potential in improving urban operations, efficiencies and resilience are far-reaching. There is a great deal of interest in Smart City Digital Twins in academia, industry and government. We want to take a moment to share ideas among researchers at Georgia Tech, identify synergies and opportunities for collaboration, and discuss how through our combined efforts we can establish a leadership role in the formation and development of this new interdisciplinary field of inquiry.
