Shortly after Head began at Georgia Tech as a postdoctoral student, Atlanta suffered a major tornado that decimated most of the trees in her neighborhood. As she worked with Trees Atlanta in the aftermath of the storm, she learned that the organization was one of many on the list of charities aided by Georgia Tech’s annual charitable campaign.

“I didn’t have much to give, but I decided I could afford to pledge $5 a month,” said Head, now associate professor and associate chair of the School of Literature, Media, and Communication. “It doesn’t sound like much, but I know that I helped cover the costs to plant about 12 large trees and dozens of seedlings that year. Micro-giving does matter. And, 100% of the gift goes directly to the charity.”

The 2019 campaign, which runs through Nov. 26, has a goal of $350,000. Faculty and staff can contribute to more than 1,300 local, state, and national organizations tackling issues from cancer research to animal welfare to children’s literacy.  

For 12 consecutive years Georgia Tech has received the Governor’s Cup for the highest contribution per employee among state institutions of its size.
