But, with more than 30,000 students enrolled, it can be a challenge to find the right fish for you.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ETaking this challenge for action, \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/gtagency.github.io\/\u0022\u003EThe Agency\u003C\/a\u003E, Georgia Tech\u0026rsquo;s student machine learning club, jumped into the online dating pool earlier this year with the launch of Love Machine (Learning). LM(L) is a matchmaking survey to help connect Georgia Tech students with their ideal partner.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EInspired by her studies in a social psychology course, fourth-year computer science major\u003Cstrong\u003E Valentine Wilson\u003C\/strong\u003E initially brought the idea to a club meeting in fall 2018.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;In class we learned about \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.gottman.com\/about\/research\/couples\/\u0022\u003Efour key relationship indicators\u003C\/a\u003E. The researcher was able to quantify what makes a relationship fail, so we decided to find out if we could quantify what makes a relationship succeed,\u0026rdquo; said Wilson.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Ch3\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EFinding Love in a \u0026lsquo;Swipe Right\u0026rsquo; Culture\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/h3\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EWhile ideas like this exist at \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.stanforddaily.com\/2017\/12\/01\/marriage-pact-pairs-students-off-using-nobel-prize-algorithm\/\u0022\u003EStanford University\u003C\/a\u003E and \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/datamatch.me\/\u0022\u003EHarvard University\u003C\/a\u003E, Georgia Tech wanted to put their own spin on campus matchmaking.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe club crafted a 32-question survey that asks students a variety of questions about their demographics, personality, and interests. For the survey, the team looked at questions from online matchmaking sites like Match.com and debated about which questions their survey should ask. Though the LM(L) questions are written in a joking manner, Wilson explained that the team spent a great deal of time thinking about what the answers might mean for finding someone\u0026rsquo;s soulmate.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;We debated a lot about questions like, \u0026lsquo;is it important to you to date someone of the same ethnicity as you?\u0026rsquo; or \u0026lsquo;how important is it that your partner is of the same political party as you?,\u0026rsquo;\u0026rdquo; said Wilson, who was one of 24 students that worked on the project.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EOnce collected, the survey results were analyzed using an unsupervised machine-learning method and a genetic algorithm that\u0026nbsp;is inspired by natural selection and genetic crossover.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Ch3\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EE-Love Note Delivered\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/h3\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe LM(L) survey was promoted last spring through posters, emails, fraternity and sorority GroupMe\u0026rsquo;s, and the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/twitter.com\/GTStudents\u0022\u003E@GTStudents\u003C\/a\u003E Twitter handle. While the project was first intended to be a joke, and a fun first project for novice machine learning students, more than 780 undergraduate and graduate students filled out the survey.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EStudents completing the survey received their match the week before finals last May \u0026ndash; a time frame Wilson says they will work to avoid in the future \u0026ndash; and love was in the air from there.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EMatches included only the ideal partner\u0026rsquo;s email address. Names and photos were excluded from the survey to prevent bias and students felt like their peers would be more honest if their identities were initially kept anonymous.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe club says they are looking into adding social media handles, photos, and a short bio into next year\u0026rsquo;s iteration. They\u0026rsquo;re also considering alternatives to email for delivering matches.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ETo date, The Agency has record of one couple that is still dating as a result of the survey. There might be more happy couples, but the club did not issue a follow-up survey to evaluate their success. Wilson stumbled upon the lovebirds via the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/gatech\/\u0022\u003EGeorgia Tech Reddit feed.\u003C\/a\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe couple, which wants to remain anonymous, admits that they may have met sometime in the next three years, but it was unlikely, and that it would have taken them a lot longer to start dating had it not been for the survey.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EWhen asked about her perspective on love after conducting this research, Wilson said, \u0026ldquo;I don\u0026rsquo;t necessarily think that there is \u0026lsquo;The One\u0026rsquo;, but there are many people who are good for you in different ways.
