Starting in September the leadership team will add \u003Cstrong\u003ECassie Mitchell \u003C\/strong\u003Eand \u003Cstrong\u003EDeven Desai\u003C\/strong\u003E as associate directors\u003Cstrong\u003E.\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EMitchell, an assistant professor in the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/bme.gatech.edu\/bme\/faculty\/Cassie-S.-Mitchell\u0022\u003EWallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering\u003C\/a\u003E will take on the role of associate director of Outreach and Diversity. She will focus on partnering the center with existing diversity organizations at Georgia Tech and local youth to pique interest in pursuing an education and career in machine learning.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;Machine learning, itself, leverages a variety of fields \u0026mdash; engineering, computer science, and mathematics, to name just a few \u0026mdash; to produce tools that impact lives every day. \u0026nbsp;It\u0026#39;s only appropriate that ML@GT continues to foster an environment that grows diversity to strengthen the creativity in problem-solving that diverse backgrounds naturally bring,\u0026rdquo; said Mitchell. \u0026ldquo;I\u0026rsquo;m excited to make machine learning more approachable and to inspire the next generation of machine learning creators and users.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EDesai, an associate professor in the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.scheller.gatech.edu\/directory\/faculty\/desai\/index.html\u0022\u003EScheller College of Business\u003C\/a\u003E, will be the center\u0026rsquo;s first associate director for Legal, Policy, Ethics, and Machine Learning. Not a technologist by training, Desai will draw from his experience working at Princeton\u0026#39;s Center for Information Technology Policy and Google as Academic Research Counsel to help policy makers, legal scholars and technologists work better together. This includes helping each party understand how a given technology works and what issues it might raise.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;I am excited to be part of ML@GT because of the opportunity to be part of a world class group of thinkers and to connect our work to the world. \u0026nbsp;I believe there is a need to bridge the worlds of technology and law, policy, and ethics,\u0026rdquo; said Desai. \u0026ldquo;ML@GT is poised to increase not only machine learning insights and breakthroughs but also the way in which machine learning is built and used to serve society.
