Georgia Tech Holds Inaugural Suicide Prevention Week

Georgia Tech will continue its focus on the mental wellness of all students, faculty, and staff members with its inaugural Suicide Prevention Week, Sept. 8-14, 2019.

The Counseling Center and a group of Georgia Tech community partners are hosting a week of events to increase awareness, provide prevention tips, and create opportunities for people to connect with each other. Tech’s observance aligns with National Suicide Prevention Week.

“Suicide is an epidemic across the country,” said Julia Rizzo, Georgia Tech’s suicide prevention and crisis response coordinator. “Campuses nationwide are working to provide programming, enhance community, increase education and awareness, and reduce the stigma around talking about suicide and seeking mental health support” in an effort to decrease and eliminate suicide.

“Unfortunately, our experiences with suicide at Tech are not unique,” she added. “As a leading innovating institution, we have an opportunity to model community-based suicide prevention. I am thrilled to have dedicated partners at Georgia Tech who are developing a week of events unique to the needs of our student population.”

The Suicide Prevention Week planning team consists of individuals who are passionate about eliminating suicide at Tech and dedicated to promoting mental wellness across campus. As they finalize the schedule, they invite the campus community to collaborate with them as co-sponsors, volunteers, or helpers during the planning process.
