Trump\u003C\/strong\u003E awarded top scientists and engineers with the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefings-statements\/president-donald-j-trump-announces-recipients-presidential-early-career-award-scientists-engineers\/\u0022\u003EPresidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineering (PECASE).\u003C\/a\u003E Three Georgia Tech faculty members have been named recipients.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EDhruv Batra\u003C\/strong\u003E, \u003Cstrong\u003EMark Davenport\u003C\/strong\u003E, and \u003Cstrong\u003EMatthew McDowell\u003C\/strong\u003E were three of the 12 researchers recognized from the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/public.tableau.com\/views\/PECASE2019GARecipients\/Dashboard1?:embed=y\u0026amp;:display_count=yes\u0026amp;:origin=viz_share_link:showVizHome=no\u0022\u003Estate of Georgia.\u003C\/a\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EPECASE is \u0026ldquo;the highest honor bestowed by the United States Government to outstanding scientists and engineers who are beginning their independent research careers and who show exceptional promise for leadership in science and technology,\u0026rdquo; according to the White House.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026quot;I\u0026#39;m extremely grateful to be awarded a PECASE. It is an incredible honor to be included in such an accomplished group of researchers. I look forward to seeing what\u0026#39;s next for all of us,\u0026rdquo; said Davenport, an associate professor in the\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.ece.gatech.edu\/\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003ESchool of Electrical and Computer Engineering\u003C\/a\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EDavenport\u0026#39;s research focuses on the fundamental role that low-dimensional models and optimization play in machine learning, signal processing, and statistical inference.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EBatra is an assistant professor in the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/ic.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003ESchool of Interactive Computing\u003C\/a\u003E. The research Batra\u0026rsquo;s lab will pursue with the funding addresses a fundamental challenge in the development of AI \u0026ndash; their \u0026ldquo;black-box\u0026rdquo; nature, the consequent difficulty humans face in identifying why or how AI systems fail, and how to improve upon those technologies. His research aims to make AI systems more trustworthy, explainable and transparent.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EBatra and Davenport are also affiliated faculty members of the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/ml.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003EMachine Learning Center at Georgia Tech\u003C\/a\u003E.
