]]>Despite this basic fact, there is a surprising lack of research at the intersection of mental health and minority populations to characterize to what extent populations are affected.
This ongoing study utilizes real world data (i.e. patient health claims data) to assess the granular characteristics of minority populations afflicted with depression, bipolar disorder, or suicidality.
In doing so, the study will answer the questions of what populations with these conditions look like (i.e. how they are characterized), how they differ from populations without these diseases, and the characteristics of patients with these conditions who do not seek follow-up to care.
Additional discussion will touch on how this study has been built, potential areas for future work and collaboration, implications for large scale network research at GTRI, and composition of studies.

The CIC encourages students to create innovative, viable products and experiences with the support of campus and industry resources and guidance. Convergence areas are determined by our campus, industry, and community partners. Winning entries will include a working end-to-end prototype which operates on converged services, media, networks, services, and platforms as well as a value proposition model.
As part of the competition, one team is awarded a Golden Ticket to participate in the Create-X Startup Launch program during the summer! Winning team members and runner up team members receive a prize for participating. The prizes vary each semester and typically include electronics and other unique items. The winning CIC teams go on to launch, commercialization, other competitions, as well as internship and job opportunities strengthened by their competition experience. CIC runs in the Fall and Spring semesters and is produced by GT-RNOC in the Institute for People and Technology (IPaT).

]]>Health equity is an overarching theme of the GCDTR’s activities, including the new Technologies Advancing Translation and Equity Core. The goal of this core is to create and support a regional translation research network in the Southeastern United States that will identify key gaps, share best practices, and work toward open, accessible technology approaches for reducing health care disparities in diabetes care and prevention.
The specific aims of the Technologies Advancing Translation and Equity Core are: To establish a network of researchers, clinicians, and health administrators across Georgia, Florida, and Tennessee to enhance knowledge sharing activities focused on technological approaches in diabetes prevention and care.
To provide expertise and consulting in five key technological and methodological areas: a) diversity driven approaches; b) patient interactive technologies; c) wearables and automated insulin delivery; d) artificial intelligence and Big Data; and e) electronic health records and clinical decision support; with specific guidance on reducing disparities and promoting equity.
To conduct focused technology assessments to identify research gaps (in our five key technology areas) that inform annual requests for technology-focused pilot grant opportunities in diabetes prevention and care in underserved populations, older patients, and those with multimorbidity.

The high-level goal of the Cognitive Augmented Reality research initiative is to develop augmented reality (AR) techniques to support workers’ cognitive processes while performing tasks in settings such as the space station, healthcare, and the classroom. Specifically, the augmentations are used to mediate visual, auditory, haptic, and sensor signals from the environment in order to help the worker focus attention, maintain situational awareness, and make effective decisions. The Cognitive AR users may be located in the physical environment or they may be working remotely via telepresence technologies. Our techniques diminish, enhance, and remap signals (e.g. stimuli and data) from the environment for the user by mapping signals (e.g. visuals of the physical scene, ambient sound, sensor data etc. ) to multi-modal AR displays (i.e. visuals, sound, & haptics). We are currently performing controlled empirical studies to understand what mediation techniques support particularly cognitive processes effectively. This work is a collaboration between GT (PI: Maribeth Gandy Coleman) Computing/HCI and NCSU (PI: Anne McLaughlin) Human Factors researchers and is funded by industry as well as NASA. In this think tank we want to explore potential use cases for the Cognitive AR tools and techniques that we are creating with the IPaT community and identify potential collaborations.

Chantal Kerssens, PhD is Executive Director of Georgia Tech's Center for Inclusive Design and Innovation (CIDI, cidi.gatech.edu), the largest research center in the College of Design. CIDI was created in 2018 by the merger of the Center for Assistive Technology and Environmental Access (CATEA) and AMAC Accessibility (Alternative Media Access Center). One emerged in the late 1970s from collaborations between Georgia Tech Industrial Design students and local disability groups; The other started to help post-secondary institutions provide accessible educational materials to print-disabled students in a timely and effective way.

The purpose of this preliminary study is to address the first two issues. ]]>What does it mean to have a new modeling software for design that allows scientists, engineers, and designers to specify their actions by drawing shapes rather than by writing scripts? What is the difference between a shape you see and the way it is currently recorded in the database of your computer? What does it mean to program with shapes?
The Shape Machine is a new computational technology that fundamentally redefines the way shapes are represented, indexed, queried and operated upon. Its foregrounding of visual rules (shape rules drawn in a 2D or 3D modeling system) over symbolic rules (instructions defined in some programming language) provides a robust and disruptive technology for engineers, computer scientists, designers, students and educators, and in general academics and professionals who use drawings and visual models to develop and communicate their ideas.
The Shape Machine is currently developed at the Shape Computation Lab at the School of Architecture, College of Design, in collaboration with the Schools of Mathematics and Interactive Computing at the Colleges of Science and Computing at Georgia Institute of Technology.

Electronic sports, known as esports, have undergone a meteoric rise in popularity over the past several decades enabled by technological advances in network connectivity, game engines, and online streaming platforms. Over 300 million fans have streamed almost 300 million hours on the Twitch platform alone, and the global viewership is expected to top 380 million by the end of 2018. However, even with the rapid acceptance and legitimation of esports in popular culture, there are still many fundamental gaps in our understanding for how to support the user experience around it.

At the same time, researchers must take care when developing any sociotechnical intervention in the health domain, since such interventions can generate unintended consequences that exacerbate disparities.

The diabetes epidemic in the United States (US) continues to grow in scale and impact on people’s health.
Though our knowledge of effective techniques for prevention and management has significantly increased, major gaps persist:
1) The proportion of people with undiagnosed diabetes and prediabetes has not improved;
2) Engagement in prevention and diabetes management is exceedingly low; and
3) Young adults and disenfranchised populations with diabetes fare poorly in terms of control.
Mobile health approaches could lead to major changes by reaching new populations and enabling effective patient engagement!
In this IPaT Thursday Think Tank, we will meet with experts from the Georgia Center for Diabetes Translation Research (GCDTR) to discuss the basics of diabetes prevention and management. Our goal is to bootstrap, motivate and inform projects in mobile health and health informatics. Come with your ideas and come ready to learn why it is so important for our research community to tackle key problems in diabetes prevention and management.

]]>We argue that many of the current limitations and risks of AI stem from a growing disconnect between the technology-centric approach to the creation of AI technologies and its inextricable embedding into complex socio-cultural contexts. Intelligent interactive systems, systems that support humans in their decision-making processes, are socio-technical systems; their ultimate impact depends on the combined behavior of machine and human intelligence, and their design requires both technological sophistication and deep understanding of human cognition, behaviors, norms, and values.
We propose a “human first” approach: the creation of AI systems, where the human perspective and needs drive the technological innovations, throughout all stages of the systems’ design (data collection, learning models, inference strategies, interaction paradigms, validation, deployment, evaluation, and maintenance). Delivering on this vision will require integrating disciplines that have traditionally been divorced from one another as well as overcoming challenges too formidable to address within the boundaries of individual projects or existing disciplines.

The Atlanta Map Room is a public space for creating interpretive maps of the city, from a combination of contemporary data, historical documents, and personal experiences. These maps are large-scale physical artifacts, collaboratively-made, and meant for exhibition. The Atlanta Map Room builds upon the recent success of the St. Louis Map Room, a project lead by artist Jer Thorp in conjunction with the Center of Creative Arts.
Our team is collaborating with Thorp to develop a unique iteration of the project in Atlanta, meant to explore invisible tensions in the city, between its rapid development as a commercial hub and its long history as a center for civil rights and culture in the Southeast. The overarching goal of the Atlanta Map Room is to investigate what it means to visualize civic dialog around data. How can the seemingly mundane details of property tax assessments, building permits, and community surveys become the source materials for acts of collaborative creative expression?

Yanni Loukissas is an Assistant Professor of Digital Media in the School of Literature, Media, and Communication at Georgia Tech, where he directs the Local Data Design Lab. His research is focused on helping creative people think critically about the social implications of emerging technologies. His forthcoming book, All Data Are Local: Thinking Critically in a Data-Driven Society (MIT Press, 2019), is addressed to a growing audience of practitioners who want to work with unfamiliar sources both effectively and ethically. He is also the author of Co-Designers: Cultures of Computer Simulation in Architecture (Routledge, 2012) and a contributor to Simulation and its Discontents (MIT Press, 2009). Before coming to Georgia Tech, he was a lecturer at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, where he co-coordinated the Program in Art, Design and the Public Domain. He was also a principal at metaLAB, a research project of the Harvard Berkman Center for Internet and Society. He has taught at Cornell, MIT, and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts. Originally trained as an architect at Cornell, he subsequently attended MIT, where he received a Master of Science and a PhD in Design and Computation. He also completed postdoctoral work at the MIT Program in Science, Technology and Society.

Steve Downs is the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s chief technology and strategy officer. In this role, he focuses on the practice of program strategy and on the alignment of the Foundation’s technology strategy and operations with its organizational directions. RWJF’s pursuit of a Culture of Health requires an approach to strategy that is highly flexible and adaptive. In his current role, Downs works with his colleagues to institutionalize an approach to program strategy that is based on the integration of learning, co-creation, and reflection into the processes of strategy development and ongoing strategy assessment and adaptation.
Since being appointed chief technology and information officer in 2011, Downs’ goal has been to ensure that RWJF staff have the resources they need to practice philanthropy at the highest level. He has emphasized technology directions—namely mobility and social CRM—that encourage informal knowledge-sharing, data-informed decision-making, and peer-to-peer engagement.
Since joining RWJF in 2002, Downs’ career at RWJF has proceeded along two parallel paths: management and programming. Along his management path, he served as the first team leader of the RWJF Pioneer portfolio, helping to shape the portfolio’s direction and initial body of work. From 2007 to 2011, Downs served as the assistant vice president of the Health Group. In this position, he worked with the senior vice president of the Health Group to oversee the Foundation’s strategies and investments in the areas of childhood obesity, public health, tobacco control, and support for vulnerable populations. He also played a key role in helping to shape and articulate the Foundation’s vision for transitioning to a “Web 2.0” philanthropy, one based on values of openness, participation, and decentralization.

The need for science, technology, education, and math (STEM) education is more evident than ever. According to Code.org, there are 500,000 computer science job openings in the U.S., more than 10 times the number of students who graduated with computer science degrees in 2017. According to the Education Commission of the States, between 2017 and 2027 STEM jobs will grow 13-percent, while all other jobs will grow 9-percent. The U.S. unemployment rate for STEM workers is 2.2-percent, while for all other works is 5.5-percent. However, the Business-Higher Education Forum reports, in 2011, that only 44-percent of 12th graders are proficient in math. And of those, 61-percent are not interested in pursuing careers in STEM. That leaves 17-percent of 12th graders who are both proficient and interested in STEM.
The gap is widening between the call and need for STEM professionals and the number of students going into STEM fields. What is the role that an institute like Georgia Tech can play in decreasing that gap? Lizanne DeStefano, Director of the Center for Education Integrating Science, Math, and Computer (CEISMC) and Sean Mulvanity, Curriculum Lead for STEM@GTRI, will provide overviews of the state of STEM education, give examples of a sample of successful STEM outreach programs and partnerships, and discuss how Georgia Tech can partner with our state and local school systems to address the growing needs for teacher preparation and student education.

The Institute for People and Technology (IPaT) brings together interdisciplinary Georgia Tech researchers to develop technology that transforms people’s lives. While we often highlight researchers and their technologies, who are the people most impacted by these innovations? For example, the elderly couple who can remain independent at home thanks to a technology developed at Georgia Tech.
Through photographic portraits and written and audio narratives, IPaT, in partnership with the Georgia Tech Office of the Arts, the Georgia Tech Library, and the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) will share the stories of everyday Georgians, their challenges, and the impact of our research in addressing those challenges. We’ll then showcase these portraits and stories during a public exhibition in Fall 2018, and the project will be featured online with support from IMLS.
At this week’s IPaT Thursday Think Tank we’ll brainstorm ideas for profiles and stories, and meet some of the people participating in the project.

]]>For the past two years we have been exploring the uses of a more responsive/interactive technology for video-conferencing and have recently concluded a user study of its application to CSCW. We will present initial analysis of the quantitative and qualitative data and discuss the interesting effects the system had not just on efficiency and effectiveness of collaborative activities, but how it affected the attitudes of participants toward each other (and towards the activity) and how their behavior and communication methods adapted. The goal of this Think Tank is to have a conversation with the community about the future of this project, what implications these findings might have for immersive telepresence and what other types of applications could benefit from this technology.

For this session, the focus will be the tension between the need to do user-centered design of health interventions, and the requirements of scale that come with trying to deploy mobile interventions nationwide. This work requires deep understanding of a user and her community to create successful interventions, but then the challenge is to create systems that impact a large enough population. Rosa Arriaga will discuss the role of theory in a) developing interventions that may be scaled across sites and even across chronic conditions and b) helping designers contextualize the design space. Eva van Leer also develops mobile health technology, specializing in "voice disorders." She'll introduce the theory that drives her research.

Funded by the GVU/IPaT Research and Engagement Grant Program, we are investigating how to facilitate collaboration through common language, processes, platforms and artifacts. The culmination of this work is designing a wearable tech garment for artist Katherine Helen Fisher to use in her performance of Characters at the Ferst Center on March 5th.
