But, this can take several days with existing technology.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EA\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/docs.google.com\/viewer?a=v\u0026amp;pid=sites\u0026amp;srcid=ZGVmYXVsdGRvbWFpbnxjaGlyZ2phaW58Z3g6MjNjMDU1YWMxODM1ZjViYw\u0022\u003Enew algorithm\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;developed at Georgia Tech, however, is shifting this paradigm by dramatically reducing the time it takes to identify genomic variations in a cell or organism to just a few hours or even minutes.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;The faster these variations can be determined, the more quickly an outbreak can be thwarted or a treatment can be prescribed. This is why we need to analyze variations in genomes as accurately and quickly as possible,\u0026rdquo; said\u0026nbsp;\u003Cstrong\u003EChirag Jain\u003C\/strong\u003E, the lead investigator on the project.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026quot;Aligning DNA sequences to an annotated reference is a key step for genotyping in biology,\u0026rdquo; said Jain. \u0026ldquo;That is why we created PasGAL, the first multi-core parallel algorithm that can align a sequence to a complex genome graph.\u0026quot;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe software packaging PasGAL, co-designed by\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.cse.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003ESchool of Computational Science and Engineering\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;and Intel researchers, utilizes modern computer architectures that are able to leverage multiple cores to perform the same operation on multiple data points simultaneously.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;That is why matching a DNA sequence to a reference graph, as is done with PasGAL, speeds up the process of genome analysis so remarkably,\u0026rdquo; he said.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EJain said, \u0026ldquo;The previous way of identifying variations in genomes was to use reference DNA from a particular individual \u0026ndash; which could only asses a single individual genome at a time.
