{"621658":{"#nid":"621658","#data":{"type":"news","title":"CTL Celebrates Outstanding TAs and Future Faculty","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EEditor\u0026#39;s Note: This story by Camryn Burke \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.ctl.gatech.edu\/news\/ctl-celebrates-outstanding-tas-and-future-faculty\u0022\u003Efirst appeared on the Center for Teaching and Learning website\u003C\/a\u003E on May 10, 2019.\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EA chance to interact with undergraduate students \u0026mdash; that\u0026rsquo;s why \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/marder.gatech.edu\/user\/555\u0022\u003EKhaled Al Kurdi\u003C\/a\u003E decided to become a teaching assistant (TA).\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;When you\u0026rsquo;re working on a Ph.D., you don\u0026rsquo;t typically get to connect with undergraduate students, because you\u0026rsquo;re always doing research,\u0026rdquo; said Al Kurdi, who is pursuing a Ph.D. in \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.chemistry.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003EChemistry and Biochemistry\u003C\/a\u003E. \u0026ldquo;I became a TA because I wanted to interact with students and challenge myself to be a better teacher.\u0026rdquo;\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAl Kurdi took home both a Thank A Teacher award and the Graduate TA of the Year award for Chemistry and Biochemistry at the 2019 TA and Future Faculty Awards Day, which was held in April. \u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe annual event is sponsored by the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/ctl.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003ECenter for Teaching and Learning\u003C\/a\u003E, and celebrates students and postdoctoral scholars who have contributed to the learning environment at Georgia Tech.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThis year, 51 students received school-level TA Awards, and 91 students received Thank A Teacher awards.
