As we get ready for pool parties, beach trips and BBQ\u0026rsquo;s\u0026nbsp;it\u0026rsquo;s\u0026nbsp;important\u0026nbsp;to remember food safety when taking our cooking outdoors.\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/salmonella\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20355329\u0022 rel=\u0022noreferrer\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003ESalmonella\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;can pose a threat when moving away from traditional kitchens.\u0026nbsp;People can contract Salmonella through contaminated water or food, more specially by consuming raw or undercooked meat, poultry or egg products. We talked to Dr.\u0026nbsp;Ben\u0026nbsp;Holton Stamps Health Services\u0026nbsp;senior director\u0026nbsp;and Leah Galante, Health\u0026nbsp;Initiatives dietitian\u0026nbsp;about the signs of Salmonella and how to prevent against\u0026nbsp;it.\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAs\u0026nbsp;you\u0026nbsp;begin to\u0026nbsp;schedule your\u0026nbsp;BBQ\u0026rsquo;s it\u0026rsquo;s\u0026nbsp;important to watch for symptoms of Salmonella. Dr. Holton said that some symptoms include, \u0026ldquo;nausea\/vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever.\u0026rdquo;\u0026nbsp;It can sometimes be difficult to tell these symptoms apart from those associated with a typical stomach bug.\u0026nbsp;\u0026ldquo;Salmonella infection is commonly associated with ingestion of poultry, eggs and milk\u0026nbsp;products, so a recent history of eating these might be\u0026nbsp;a clue to consider Salmonella,\u0026rdquo; remarked Dr. Holton.\u0026nbsp;If you or any of your dinner guests experience any prolonged symptoms, it might be time to seek medical attention.\u0026nbsp;Additionally, if you experience \u0026ldquo;symptoms of\u0026nbsp;dehydration, including lightheadedness, dizziness, increased thirst,\u0026nbsp;or decreased urination, it is important that you talk to a doctor.\u0026nbsp;It is necessary that you speak to a doctor if you experience any prolonged symptoms,\u0026nbsp;however Salmonella typically\u0026nbsp;resolves on its own with supportive treatment\u0026nbsp;such as fluids and electrolytes,\u0026rdquo; said\u0026nbsp;Dr. Holton.\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThere are many ways to ensure that you do not contract Salmonella. When cooking meat, Galante said,\u0026nbsp;\u0026ldquo;the safest way to tell that meat is cooked is to ensure it has reached the recommended safe internal temperature.\u0026rdquo; Steak, pork and fish all need to be cooked until the\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.foodnetwork.com\/grilling\/grilling-central-how-tos\/articles\/meat-and-poultry-temperature-guide\u0022 rel=\u0022noreferrer\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003Einternal temperature\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;is 145 degrees Fahrenheit. Chicken and ground beef need to reach a temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit. When it comes to preparing veggies, it is important to clean them with warm water.
