White was recently named a \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/diversity.gatech.edu\/DIFellowsProgram\u0022\u003E2019 Georgia Tech Diversity and Inclusion Fellow.\u003C\/a\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EWhite was one of 21 people from across campus named to the 2019 class. Computer Science (CS) undergraduate student \u003Cstrong\u003ELorin Achey \u003C\/strong\u003Eand CS graduate student \u003Cstrong\u003EKeshav Bumbraw \u003C\/strong\u003Ealso earned the prestigious fellowship this year. In all, there were 94 applicants.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EWhite is currently a \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/constellations.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003EConstellations Center for Equity in Computing Fellow\u003C\/a\u003E. Her continued work through the Diversity and Inclusion program help the center\u0026rsquo;s ongoing efforts to combat the shortage of K-12 computer science teachers in Georgia and across the country.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;I am humbled and honored to be selected for this fellowship. It is my hope that my project will continue to help bridge the gaps, increase teacher self-efficacy, and increase\u0026nbsp;access to computational thinking, computer science, STEM materials and activities for teachers to integrate within their classrooms, all of which are desperately needed,\u0026rdquo; said White.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ESupported by \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/diversity.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003EInstitute Diversity\u003C\/a\u003E and the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.advance.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003EADVANCE program\u003C\/a\u003E, the fellows program cultivates a network of ambassadors who will advance a culture of inclusive excellence. Each class of fellows consists of faculty, staff, and students who work collectively and individually to make Georgia Tech\u0026rsquo;s campus a place where people feel comfortable, safe, and empowered to discuss inclusion and diversity.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EPast projects from Diversity and Inclusion Fellows include events like \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/diversity.gatech.edu\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/keys_di_bwg_poster.pdf\u0022\u003EBlack Women Gather\u003C\/a\u003E, Ending the Gender Gap in STEM Fields, \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/diversity.gatech.edu\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/dif_poster.pdf\u0022\u003EInternational Alumni-Student Mentorship Program\u003C\/a\u003E, and LGBTQUIA+ Storytelling in Virtual Reality.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EWhite\u0026rsquo;s project will use a stipend to support professional development of any metro-Atlanta area middle or high school teacher who teaches a student population that predominantly comprises students of color. The project will work to better equip Georgia teachers in integrating computer science along with science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) curricula into their schools. It may also give more teachers an opportunity to prepare for and take the computer science certification test.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ELaunched in 2016, the program was created after the 2012 Georgia Tech Climate Assessment Survey showed that some faculty, students, and staff felt marginalized by race, gender, and ethnicity.
