The international competition spotlights innovative initiatives aimed at enhancing student learning outcomes and employability across five disciplines and 17 categories.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe CRC is co-directed by College of Sciences Professor and \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/globalchange.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003EGeorgia Tech Global Change Program\u003C\/a\u003E Director \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/shadow.eas.gatech.edu\/~kcobb\/people\/people.html\u0022\u003EKim Cobb\u003C\/a\u003E and Scheller College of Business Professor and \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.scheller.gatech.edu\/centers-initiatives\/ray-c-anderson-center-for-sustainable-business\/index.html\u0022\u003ERay C. Anderson Center for Sustainable Business\u003C\/a\u003E (\u0026ldquo;Center\u0026rdquo;) Faculty Director \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.scheller.gatech.edu\/directory\/faculty\/toktay\/index.html\u0022\u003EBeril Toktay\u003C\/a\u003E. The CRC pairs teams of undergraduate students with a diverse set of local organizations to identify opportunities for large-scale energy efficiency gains that will save greenhouse gas emissions and deliver significant energy cost savings.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThis year\u0026rsquo;s competition received 1,184 project submissions from 39 countries. Submissions were evaluated by 160 international judges. The CRC won first place in the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.reimagine-education.com\/sustainability\/\u0022\u003E\u0026ldquo;Sustainability\u0026rdquo; category\u003C\/a\u003E as well as first place in the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.reimagine-education.com\/discipline-2019-award-winners\/\u0022\u003E\u0026ldquo;Natural Sciences\u0026rdquo; discipline\u003C\/a\u003E. It was also selected as one of ten finalists to advance to the Grand Finale.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe CRC began as a class project that Cobb initiated in 2007. In 2017, it was expanded to include co-op and internship students across Georgia Tech in collaboration with Toktay and with funding from the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.raycandersonfoundation.org\/ray-c.-anderson-foundation-awards-30,000-to-georgia-tech-for-carbon-reduction-challenge\u0022\u003ERay C. Anderson Foundation\u0026rsquo;s NextGen Committee\u003C\/a\u003E and the Scheller College of Business Dean\u0026rsquo;s Innovation Fund. It also became an affiliated project of the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/sls.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003EGeorgia Tech Serve-Learn-Sustain initiative\u003C\/a\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EIn 2018, the CRC expanded its reach by inviting Emory University students to participate as well. The CRC became an official activity of the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.georgiaclimateproject.org\/\u0022\u003EGeorgia Climate Project\u003C\/a\u003E, a statewide, multi-year effort to improve understanding of climate impacts and solutions across the state and to encourage Georgia residents to take effective, science-based climate action. CRC projects launched since 2017 \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.sustainablebrands.com\/news_and_views\/leadership\/beril_toktay\/atlanta_dark_horse_sustainability_innovation\u0022\u003Ehave already resulted in over two million pounds of avoided CO\u003Csub\u003E2\u003C\/sub\u003E\u0026nbsp;emissions and are projected to deliver hundreds of thousands of dollars in avoided energy costs\u003C\/a\u003E to partner organizations.
