{"614066":{"#nid":"614066","#data":{"type":"news","title":"ML@GT Professors Receive $500k NSF Grant","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EMachine Learning Center at Georgia Tech\u003C\/strong\u003E Professors \u003Cstrong\u003ERaghupathy Sivakumar\u003C\/strong\u003E and\u003Cstrong\u003E Faramarz Fekri \u003C\/strong\u003Ehave been awarded a $500,000 grant from the \u003Cstrong\u003ENational Science Foundation\u003C\/strong\u003E (NSF) to study the feasibility of combining the power of the human brain and machine learning techniques.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe award comes from the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/funding\/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=503286\u0022\u003ENSF\u0026rsquo;s Cyber-Physical Systems\u003C\/a\u003E program and will support Sivakumar and Fekri\u0026rsquo;s project titled \u003Cem\u003ECPS: Small: Multi-Human Assisted\u0026nbsp;Learning for Multi-Agent Systems using Intrinsically Generated Event-Related\u0026nbsp;EEG Potentials\u003C\/em\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EMachine\u0026nbsp;learning solutions are particularly useful for monitoring, instrumenting,\u0026nbsp;and optimizing complex cyber-physical systems (CPS). Supervised or controlled by computer-based algorithms, CPS\u0026rsquo;s include things like autonomous cars, \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.smartgrid.gov\/the_smart_grid\/smart_grid.html\u0022\u003Esmart grids\u003C\/a\u003E, and \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/science.howstuffworks.com\/transport\/flight\/modern\/autopilot1.htm\u0022\u003Eautomatic pilot avionics.\u003C\/a\u003E However, these systems still need human help recognizing natural speech patterns and complex scenes or images.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ESivakumar and Fekri\u0026rsquo;s goal is to allow humans to assist with machine learning algorithms in this environment. Their approach uses a human-in-the-loop model. Using electroencephalogram (EEG), the team hopes to use human brain wave activity to help speed up the learning process for the algorithms that power CPS\u0026rsquo;s.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe results of the research will be evaluated using both game proxy-based analysis and experimental analysis within the context of real-world CPS.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe team\u0026rsquo;s award runs for three years beginning in January 2019.
