Georgia Tech Establishes New Undergraduate Korean Program

Over the last decade, the Korean faculty in the School of Modern Languages at the Georgia Institute of Technology have addressed a rapidly growing interest in Korea studies through a range of new and innovative programs.

We are proud to announce the addition of the Korean language as its own major in the Applied Languages and Intercultural Studies (ALIS), International Affairs and Modern Languages (IAML), and Global Economics and Modern Languages (GEML) B.S. degree programs.

This makes Georgia Tech one of the only places in the Southeast to offer a Bachelor’s program in Korean language and intercultural studies. The initiative builds on minors in Korean and East Asian Studies, the successful immersive summer abroad program Korean LBAT (Language for Business and Technology), and collaborations with the School of Economics and the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs.

A degree in Korean prepares students for careers in industry, science, and diplomacy whether in Korea, the United States, or Metropolitan Atlanta area, which is home to over 70 Korean companies.

“We hope to attract students from diverse backgrounds looking to become fluent in Korean or to build up their CVs by adding a second major,” said Kim Yongtaek, Korean Program Director, School of Modern Languages.

“The School’s innovative suite of courses in Korean language and culture complements Georgia Tech’s range of internships and service learning opportunities and provides exceptional opportunities for student learning and public engagement,” says Anna Westerstahl Stenport, Chair of the School of Modern Languages. “We are very proud of the program and the support it has already garnered from community members and corporations in the Atlanta region.”

For more information on the new Korean major, please contact Professor Kim Yongtaek at: yongtaek.kim@modlangs.gatech.edu, or visit modlangs.gatech.edu.

The School of Modern Languages is a unit of the Georgia Tech Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts.
