Get Out of Lab and Involved in These 6 Student Orgs

Life at Georgia Tech isn't all about class and research. There are a variety of clubs you can join to learn salsa dancing, improve campus legislation, and network with professionals in your future field.

If you're looking for a club that might be a fit for you, here are a few to consider.

Salsa Club

Always wanted to learn how to dance? The Salsa Club might be able to teach you a few moves.

"Our club brings classes, dance parties, nightlife, performances, and competitions to all members of the campus community, regardless of their skill level,” said Vindhyasree Rapolu, club president. “By joining our club, you’ll meet tons of people at our lessons and socials in an easy, relaxed, and joyful environment."

Students who pay the $60 membership fee can join the lessons in salsa, bachata, and tango. (Lessons are held Sunday through Thursday at 9 p.m. in the Peachtree Room, Student Center Commons.)

Also, twice each semester, the club holds a Salsa Sting party that’s free to all members. Plus, members carpool to salsa events across Atlanta once a month.

Student Alumni Association

If connecting with Tech alumni and networking with people working at companies like Coca-Cola sound like fits for your free time, the Student Alumni Association (SAA) could be the group for you.

“SAA is a student organization that connects its members to Tech alumni to enhance students’ educational experience and professional development,” said Juan Mena, graduate student liaison for SAA. “Members can connect with alumni through one-on-one mentorship programs like Mentor Jackets, through panels with industry experts like Expert Jackets, and through other networking events.”

For a one-time, $10 membership fee, you have acces to the more than 100 events SAA holds each year, including networking functions with local businesses at Jackets on the Job, Tech spirit events like Shed the Red, and life skills workshops on everything from finance to self-defense.

Graduate Society of Women Engineers

Want to connect with more women in STEM? The Georgia Tech branch of the Graduate Society of Women Engineers (Grad SWE) provides an opportunity for you to network with other students and companies in Atlanta.

“Our group is an organization that is focused on creating a space where graduate women across STEM can get to know each other,” said Isabella Sanders, club president. “We hold a variety of social and industry events that are open to all students, regardless of gender.”

The group meets every Tuesday at 5 p.m., providing members a chance to connect and share news about the club’s resources.

For a $20 fee, memebrs have access to events including weekly networking opportunities with companies like Uber and Facebook, Pinterest craft nights with other students, and workshops on topics such as creating resumes. Members can also join the group's outreach program to mentor middle and high school girls.

Marksmanship Club

If you've been curious about how to use a firearm or just enjoy shooting, the Marksmanship Club is here to assist.

The club is open to users of all ages, and you don’t have to own a firearm to participate. Members are invited to join outings (typically every two weeks) to spots like pistol and skeet shotgun ranges, as well as safety trainings. (The group provides access to rifles, scopes, and other equipment for use at the outings.)

Ph.D. to Consulting Club

If you’re considering a career consulting in business strategies or management, the Ph.D. to Consulting Club might be a resource for you.

Members can learn how to succeed in consulting careers by attending resume and interview workshops or in information sessions on different companies that hire Ph.D. candidates. There are also opportunities to participate in coffee chats with professional consultants or in networking events with businesses like McKinsey & Company or Community Consulting Teams.

Graduate Student Government Association

If finding ways to improve how your student fees are used or supporting student mental health are priorities for you, consider joining the Graduate Student Government Association (Grad SGA).

“Grad SGA provides a couple of key services for graduate students," said Andrew Cox, Grad SGA president. "For example, we allocate funding for student organizations and provide an avenue for students to address a wide range of issues on campus."

Grad SGA has several initiatives that graduate students can work on including partnering with administrators to improve use of mandatory student fees and organizing the annual Grad Picnic.

“I’ve found that students who join our organization benefit from meeting and interacting with various students, organizations, and administrators that they wouldn’t normally encounter in their day-to-day life here at Tech,” Cox added.
