Meet Ty McCaffrey – B.S. Materials Science and Engineering, Class of 2022

Hometown – Lawrenceville, Georgia

Why did you choose your major?

I've always been a math and science person. During my senior year of high school, I really enjoyed taking physics and chemistry. After attending a materials science and engineering (MSE) career day event, I decided MSE was a good blend of my interests.

What are some of the things you’d like to accomplish after graduation?

One personal goal is to make a positive difference in the world – whether through solving a major issue by designing new materials or leading materials innovation. Overall, I want to use my MSE degree to help others in some way.

What have you enjoyed about your experiences at Georgia Tech?

I've enjoyed the chance to meet many incredible new people. I’ve enjoyed attending a school with great people who share similar interests.

What do you like to do outside of class?

I love to swim, and having an Olympic-sized pool on campus is such a cool experience. Although I haven't had much time lately, I always used to joke that the water was my second home — I like to spend as much time swimming as possible.
