And at this point, the boundaries of what data science encompasses are still being defined.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ETo help further this process of defining data science, dozens of leading data scientists recently gathered in Park City, Utah for the\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/sites.google.com\/msdse.org\/2018leadershipsummit\/home\u0022\u003E2018 Data Science Leadership Summit\u003C\/a\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe goal for the summit was to create an academic community for data science that takes collective responsibility for advancing research, education, practice, outreach, and public engagement.\u0026nbsp;\u200b\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.cse.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003ESchool of Computational Science and Engineering\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;Professor and Co-Executive Director of the\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/ideas.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003EInstitute for Data Engineering and Science\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003Cstrong\u003ESrinivas Aluru\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/strong\u003Eserved as chair of this historic summit.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;Most universities don\u0026rsquo;t have data science departments. Essentially, we want to identify who is leading data science activities on these campuses. In some cases, it\u0026rsquo;s an institute, in some cases it\u0026rsquo;s a person leading an educational program, and in some cases, it could be a department chair,\u0026rdquo; said Aluru.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;We are looking for people who are influencing data science research and education and bringing them together for a collaborative conversation.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe two-day summit, held Oct. 12-13, included session topics ranging from data science organizational structures, undergraduate data science education to data ethics and privacy as well as academic data science career paths. Two keynote presentations by leading data scientists\u0026nbsp;\u003Cstrong\u003EVipin Kumar\u003C\/strong\u003E, of the\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/twin-cities.umn.edu\/\u0022\u003EUniversity of Minnesota\u003C\/a\u003E,\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/mediaspace.gatech.edu\/media\/Vipin+Kumar\/1_090einqy\u0022\u003Ewho recently presented a CSE distinguished lecture\u003C\/a\u003E, and\u0026nbsp;\u003Cstrong\u003EBlaise Aguera y Arcas\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/strong\u003Eof\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/ai.google\/\u0022\u003EGoogle AI\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;were also highlights of the event.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe summit marks the second recent gathering\u0026nbsp;of academic leaders who influence data science research and education on their campuses.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003E\u003Cem\u003EInternational data science event\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/em\u003E\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EA similar meeting targeted to data science institute and center leaders worldwide took place in August. The day-long invitation-only\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.kdd.org\/kdd2018\/applied-data-science-invited-panel\u0022\u003Eapplied data science panel\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;was orchestrated\u0026nbsp;by\u0026nbsp;the\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.turing.ac.uk\/\u0022\u003EAlan Turing Institute\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;and\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/data-science\/\u0022\u003EThe Data Science Institute\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;of the Imperial College London. Aluru represented Georgia Tech at the event, which was held in conjunction with the twenty-fourth international conference on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining (\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.kdd.org\/kdd2018\/\u0022\u003EKDD 2018\u003C\/a\u003E).\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EDuring the event, attendees explored\u0026nbsp;challenges to understanding and defining standards and definitions for analytics roles, skill sets, and career paths in the data science industry.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;Some of the goals of the day were to learn best practices from other institutes and programs, figure out how to move forward together as a community, and understand the funding models across different countries and universities.\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;We also made progress on issues such as how should we educate? What research we should focus on?
