That\u0026rsquo;s a one followed by 18 zeroes, or what scientists call \u0026quot;exascale\u0026quot;\u0026nbsp;machines.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThese will be machines with one billion processing cores. Thing is, we don\u0026rsquo;t have computer codes that can actually use all that power efficiently \u0026mdash; power that has the potential to unlock all kinds of new knowledge.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EPolo Chau\u003C\/strong\u003E\u0026nbsp;and\u0026nbsp;\u003Cstrong\u003EEdmond Chow\u003C\/strong\u003E, associate professors in the School of Computational Science and Engineering, are\u0026nbsp;team\u0026nbsp;members\u0026nbsp;on a new $2.8 million project to make use of all those processors to study the interactions of atoms using quantum mechanics.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EFunded by the U.S. Department of Energy, the four-year\u0026nbsp;study \u0026mdash; if successful \u0026mdash;\u0026nbsp;will mean scientists can study and understand chemical systems that include up to 10 million atoms.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EPhanish Suryanarayana\u003C\/strong\u003E\u0026nbsp;in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering is the team\u0026nbsp;leader.
