In her presentation, Prof. Montes-Alcal\u0026aacute; talked about the misconceptions and controversies surrounding the so-called Spanglish, the realities of language contact in bilingual communities, and the impact of language attitudes on the future of Spanish in the US.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EIn her presentation,\u0026nbsp;Montes-Alcal\u0026aacute; discussed how the\u0026nbsp;mix of Spanish and English is a natural, albeit often poorly understood, behavior in the discourse of bilingual individuals. \u0026quot;Misconceptions surrounding the so-called Spanglish influence our attitudes towards the present and future of Spanish in the US,\u0026quot; says\u0026nbsp;Montes-Alcal\u0026aacute;. Her presentation concluded with a discussion of\u0026nbsp;the principles established in language mixing as well as the valuable functions it performs in bilingual communities.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EDr. Cecilia Montes-Alcal\u0026aacute; received her PhD in Hispanic Linguistics from the University of California, Santa Barbara.
