Two examples of his work are\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/minsuk.com\/research\/activis\/\u0022\u003EActiVis\u003C\/a\u003E, a visualization system\u0026nbsp;for industry-scale deep neural network models\u0026nbsp;that is deployed at Facebook, and the newly released\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/poloclub.github.io\/ganlab\/\u0022\u003EGAN Lab, which is now available to the public online.\u003C\/a\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EGAN Lab: Understanding Complex Deep Generative Models Using Interactive Visual Experimentation\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EGAN Lab is Kahng\u0026rsquo;s\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/minsuk.com\/research\/papers\/kahng-ganlab-vast2018.pdf\u0022\u003Elatest research project\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;and\u0026nbsp;was produced in collaboration with\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/ai.google\/research\/teams\/brain\u0022\u003EGoogle Brain\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;and Chau. It is an open-source interactive tool created for a wide audience \u0026ndash; including non-experts \u0026ndash; to learn, experiment, and play with GANs.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;A GAN, or a generative adversarial network, is one of the popular, but hard-to-understand deep learning models that can be destructive to a machine learning (ML) system,\u0026rdquo; explained Kahng. \u0026ldquo;GANs take a small piece of input \u0026ndash; such as a few random numbers \u0026ndash; and produce a complex output, like an image of a realistic-looking face.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EA generative model or system that can produce realistic images or simulations can be extraordinarily useful for applications ranging from art to enhancing blurry images. However, these can be dangerous as well if maliciously altered for systems that are dependent image recognition, such as self-driving cars.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAccording to the GAN Lab creators, \u0026ldquo;GAN Lab enables people to learn about the training process of this complex generative model. Users can interactively train a GAN model by experimenting with several options, and the tool visualizes the model\u0026rsquo;s inner-workings, helping people understand the complex model training process.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EThe how and why\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;When I was a master\u0026rsquo;s student in South Korea, I worked on recommender systems, one of the many applications of machine learning,\u0026rdquo; said Kahng.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ERecommender systems are information filtering systems that aim to predict ratings or user preferences, such as the suggestions given on your favorite movie streaming site or monthly grab bag. Through his work in this area, Kahng found that beyond simply producing results, he was increasingly interested in helping others make sense of their results.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;I realized, for me, it\u0026rsquo;s equally as important to explain how such a system works and explain what is going on inside the model.
