The title of his talk will be \u003Cstrong\u003E\u201cMetabolomics\nas a Unique Biochemical Approach for Therapeutic Discovery\u0022\u003C\/strong\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EAbstract: \u003C\/strong\u003EQuantitative global analysis of endogenous \nmetabolites from cells, tissues, fluids or whole organisms - \nmetabolomics, is becoming an integral part of functional genomics \nefforts as well as a tool for understanding fundamental biochemistry. \nWhere the genome and proteome represent upstream biochemical events, the\n metabolites correlate with the most downstream biochemistry and \ntherefore most closely represent the phenotype.  This has been proven by\n the broad success of metabolite analysis in clinical diagnostics. The \nexperimental aim in our studies is to obtain a comprehensive \nquantitative view of the metabolome to expand our understanding of what \npathways are altered in specific diseases. We have developed multiple \nnovel mass spectrometry platforms for metabolomics including both \nsolution-based approaches and surface-based mass spectrometry, such as \nnanostructure-initiator mass spectrometry (NIMS) for tissue imaging, to \naddress this problem. These platforms will be presented in the context \nof its application to discovering new disease therapies\/pathways for \nchronic pain and multiple sclerosis.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EAdditional Information: \u003C\/strong\u003EGary Siuzdak is Senior Director of the Scripps \nCenter for Mass Spectrometry and Professor of Molecular Biology at The \nScripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California (\u003Ca title=\u0022http:\/\/masspec.scripps.edu\/\u0022 href=\u0022http:\/\/masspec.scripps.edu\/\u0022\u003Ehttp:\/\/masspec.scripps.edu\/\u003C\/a\u003E).\n He is also Faculty Guest at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and \nserved as Vice President of the American Society for Mass Spectrometry. \n His research includes developing novel approaches to metabolomics, the \ndevelopment of nanostructure-initiated desorption\/ionization, intact \nviral analysis, preparative mass spectrometry, and mass-based \ninhibitor-enzyme screening.
