611245 news 1536599805 1536675882 In the summer of 2018, assistant professor Allen Hyde's urban sociology class interviewed residents in Grove Park, an Atlanta community that has seen white flight and disinvestment over the last 30-40 years, about changes in the neighborhood and their expectations for the future. With the recent breaking of ground for the Westside Reservoir Park and opening of Proctor Creek Greenway and Westside Atlanta Beltline Trail, Grove Park will likely be a community that experiences massive growth and investment over the next few years. Students learned from the residents themselves about how they perceive these changes, particularly potential gentrification and displacement, and their effects on different members of the community in positive and negative ways. Students then created posters to share with Grove Park summarizing key points from the interviews, as well as uploaded the interviews to NPR's StoryCorps Website. This course was part of the new summer iGniTe program for incoming students and built upon previous Serve-Learn-Sustain relationships with the Grove Park Foundation and Todd Michney and Jennifer Singh.
