{"608053":{"#nid":"608053","#data":{"type":"news","title":"New App Lets Users Create, Place 3D Memes in the World Around Them","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EAll the world\u0026rsquo;s a canvas... at least for memes created through a new augmented reality (AR) app developed at Georgia Tech.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EUnlike Snapchat and similar AR apps that apply filters primarily to images of the user, \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/app\/memeois-world\/id1384366139?ls=1\u0026amp;mt=8\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003E\u003Cem\u003EMemeois World\u003C\/em\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E focuses on the user and the space around them.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe app is the first of its kind that lets users create original 3D memes and virtually place them on a wall, on a building, in the sky, or just about anywhere else in their immediate environment. To date, nearly 10,000 AR memes have been created and shared using the \u003Cem\u003EMemeois World\u003C\/em\u003E app.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Ch5\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EExpression beyond plain text\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/h5\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;My vision is to enable communication through the use of augmented reality,\u0026rdquo; said third-year computer science major \u003Cstrong\u003EAnushk Mittal\u003C\/strong\u003E. \u0026ldquo;Memes are a fun and effective way to express yourself beyond the constraints of regular text. This app lets you take advantage of the world around you to create contextual 3D memes.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ETo create an AR meme, the user opens the app and then selects a space through the app viewer. Using their finger, the user writes a message on the screen or selects from a library of more than a million existing memes, which is then virtually transferred to the space they have chosen.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EUsers can take photos or make videos and GIFs of the meme in the space around them to share with friends or post on social media. Viewers do not need the app to see the AR memes shared with them.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Ch5\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003ESharing meme worlds\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/h5\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EFor the meme creators however, using the app \u0026ldquo;is like your own virtual meme world, a world full of 3D memes and meme posters,\u0026rdquo; Mittal said. \u0026ldquo;The memes stay there until you delete them so you can launch the app and see your creation any time you are in that area.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe next step for \u003Cem\u003EMemeois World\u003C\/em\u003E, according to Mittal, is to create shared meme worlds.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;Ideally, users will be alerted when they are near memes created by their friends. They will be able to open their phones, see the meme, and even add to it. It\u0026rsquo;s like \u003Cem\u003EPok\u0026eacute;mon Go\u003C\/em\u003E, but for memes,\u0026rdquo; Mittal said.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cem\u003EMemeois World\u003C\/em\u003E was developed using Apple\u0026rsquo;s ARkit and builds on Mittal\u0026rsquo;s previous work. He and his collaborator, fourth-year computer science major \u003Cstrong\u003EJoshua Wang\u003C\/strong\u003E, \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.cc.gatech.edu\/news\/603513\/making-memes-masses\u0022\u003Ecreated an app called \u003Cem\u003EMemeois\u003C\/em\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E that uses machine learning to curate memes based on personal interests.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cem\u003EMemeois\u003C\/em\u003E garnered Mittal and Wang a spot in the 2017 \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/inventureprize.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003EInVenture Prize\u003C\/a\u003E competition.
