No More Chicken Soup: Data Is the Answer to Fighting the Flu

Most Americans are familiar with the failure of the 2017-18 flu vaccine to prevent widespread outbreaks of the disease. Recently, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation announced it would award $12 million to accelerate the search for a universal flu vaccine.

In a new Scientific American article, ISyE Professor Eva Lee describes her efforts as lead analyst on a multidisciplinary team of researchers from Emory, the CDC, and Georgia Tech to predict the immunity of a vaccine without exposing individuals to infection -- including flu, yellow fever, and malaria.

To learn more about the success of the DAMIP model that Lee's team developed, and the role of operations research in developing new vaccines, read more here: http://bit.ly/2lHQ4wA.
